Randy's  radiant smile that became etched in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him, emanated from his heart and soul. In today's parlance he would probably be described as "The Real Deal" or "Old School.  Hard work, integrity, compassion, striving for excellence, and seeking to help and heal in his profession were his goals.  His priorities, i.e., devotion to his Lord and Savior 1st, his family 2nd, himself last, and spreading joy and humor were the hallmarks of Randy's life and legacy.  I'm thankful to have called him my friend, and will always remember the interactions we had together.

Some of the best Saturdays of my life were spent with the Flares, with my Jim on his trusty accordion, and our leader Randy on drums with his wonderful smile, keeping the party going at all costs! Kathy and I didn't care how we looked, as we jitterbugged and bunny hopped together, at all the weddings. I still miss those days and all the laughs we shared. He was a special man, and he's probably playing POLKAS in heaven keeping the angels smiling, as he sings, what was always his favorite part, "Whoop,  Whoop, Whoop!!"  It was such a joy to know him,  our memories of those days will always be a treasure.

There is so much to say about my dad.   For everyone who knows us, you know what a very special relationship I have had with my dad and how very close we were!   I have been very lucky and blessed to have been able to share a wonderful relationship with him for over 40 years.  Even though I wish it had been MUCH longer, I feel very thankful for what I had, as not everyone has had the kind of relationship with their dad that I have been blessed to have.  I have been told my entire life that I look like my dad and that I have his personality and sense of humor. This of course is the greatest of compliments!

 NO ONE loved people and life as much as my dad did! He loved being a dad!  He was at EVERYTHING. Every school event, birthday party, band/choir concert, ballet recital, scouts always behind a video camera capturing every moment!  We had the most wonderful family vacations! He had us laughing until we cried all of the time! He loved having his family with him at all times.   It was very hard for him to let me go to get married but then he was rewarded for letting go with grandchildren!:)

He was just as amazing as a grandpa as he was a dad!  He LOVED our kids!!  Once again, when he was able, he was there for every Baptism,  birthday party, recital, play, music concert,  enjoying every minute!   When he was no longer able to travel we brought the kids' events to him by visiting him at the nursing home in ballet outfits, graduation gowns, even a First Communion dress and we have pictures of him with the kids in their special outfits to treasure forever. We are so blessed to live only 10 minutes away from my parents, so my kids spent a lot of time at their house.  Grandpa may not have been able to get down on the floor to play or run around after them, but he would give them rides on his walker, read to them from his chair.. but most importantly, he loved to just watch them and showed this love to them until the very end.  And they loved him.

Thank you Dad for being the best dad and grandpa a family could ever have and will never forget! WE love you forever and wait for the day we will be with you again!

Randy and I met as musicians. But soon  a long term friendship between our families began to grow. We met, lucky for me, because Randy's keyboard player was leaving the area and somehow he had my name and passed it on to Randy. I was invited to hear the band at a wedding reception they were playing. After hearing the band for the first time my thoughts were, WOW, these guys are really good. Randy was playing exceptionally good that night. I kept my fingers crossed hoping I could make the cut. Now it was time for the audition. I was a bit nervous but things went well with both Randy and the guys breaking the ice with laughs and just  plain funny stuff.The music went well too. Topping off the audition evening was meeting two of the nicest folks.Randy's Mom and Dad who allowed us to practice at their home on a regular basis. Things went well for me that day as Randy picked me to join the band. This was the start of many years of great fun and camaraderie. There is a bond that occurs between musicians that only a fellow musician can know. Sort of a spiritual thing. It shows up during those times when the band is sounding great and the crowd is responding and showing their approval. Randy and I shared that experience. As I will, many times, search for a memory of those good old days, I"ll call up that bond and I'll find Randy in that spiritual place.

Dr Gunderson welcomed me into Powers Center as a student teacher and then brought me on staff as an itinerant & quickly nicknamed "Little Jennifer". He truly gave me my first taste of being a teacher and what the world of Deaf education was going to be like. He was so supportive, kind, generous and light hearted. Randy always had a smile for the staff despite a rough day. He never ruled with an iron fist but instead with a warm heart. The Dilly bars at a wednesday staff meeting, chatting through an evaluation at a feeder school, asking how the family was doing, taking an interest in me as a person not just a staff member, chasing geese of the freshly seeded grass outside Powers Center with a plastic baseball bat.... those are just a few of the memories I have of Randy!  So many people are in my life because Randy took a chance on a 22yr old new graduate.....thank you..... for everything.

What an absolute joy you brought to my childhood. I will never forget the belly pains from laughter each and every time we saw you. One of my favorites that I quote often is: " wife's got a bum foot"!! Also when you were mimicking my Mom on the piano singing... (I won't state the lyrics here). Ha!! Little did we know that years later we would still be singing that song... and meaning it!!!! Oh! Thank you so much for including us in your life and family memories! They truly were a solid foundation to my youth! I can't wait to see you again! We will have many many more laughs!

Our sincerest condolences to Kathy, Holly, Patrick and the entire extended Gunderson family.  We are absolutely devastated over the loss of our good friend of over 50 years.  Randy has been a terrific friend since Lane Tech High School and I spent over 33 of those years being his sax man in The Flares.  What fantastic times we had together entertaining at hundreds of weddings and parties, every one of which he contracted, arranged and shepherded to a successful outcome.  And you know there had to be more than a few brides that were a challenge for him.  But he always maintained his cool, always smiled and added levity to his MC role.  Even when some of us in the band may not have always agreed on something, Randy put his leadership skills to work to ensure we reached a favorable consensus.  That included making sure we all drove 30 miles through blinding snowstorms or that record 27° below in Jan. '85 (yes we played that night) to make sure that every wedding and party was a success.  And he did it all with a wonderful sense of humor and understanding.  While, like Randy, playing in a band was not my primary career, some of my best and most fun memories over all those years are the ones working with Randy  not just playing at the events, but at the rehearsals and especially the late breakfasts afterward.  Randy was absolutely hilarious recapping our many adventures together.  We often roared with laughter, even though we heard those jokes numerous times before.  Thank you Randy.  We will all miss you my dearest friend!

Laughter echoing down the hall, a box of donuts to share and a smile that lights up a room, delightful stories about his family and hug for a student passing by ... that's how I remember Randy starting most days at school. He was a gem of a boss that intrinsically knew how to put everyone at ease and respected the importance of your life away from work. Randy strived to find a silver lining in every situation and adored all the students under his charge. He taught me to always view the whole child and to work as a team. His influence echoes across the generations of the lives he touched. It's just not possible to forget him.

Dear Kathy, Holly and Patrick,
      Outside of family there are only a few friends who have been a part of our lives as long as Randy. High school parties, dates, proms, graduations, weddings, baptisms and all of the other moments that fill our lives with memories, included Randy. Listing the times we shared together and all of the laughter would fill volumes. Whether we were riding in an Oldsmobile or a ski boat, helping a person in the rest room of a German restaurant, or putting up aluminum siding and acting like we knew what we were doing, we laughed! Uncle Randy's laughter and generous spirit were gifts, and he was a wonderful part of our lives and our family. We will all miss him, perhaps for different reasons, but his memory will always bring a smile to our faces. We Love you.

Well my dear friend it seems I missed calling you this morning. There were a few things I wanted to say to you so I am going to say them anyway. We both remember sitting as little boys on our front porch on Montrose ave. sharing our dreams. You wanted to be a doctor and you did and I wanted to be a dentist and I did. The wonderful surprises that life brought us that we didn't talk about. We both married beautiful young ladies, and little did we know how more beautiful they would become as the years went on. We both sure lucked out there. Then came our children. Can you possibly imagine a life without Holly or Patrick. I know that I can't mine. Thanks Randy for all the great memories you included me in , in your life. The jokes and teasing will leave a huge void. I'll still try to keep up my part. I know Chris will always stay in touch with Kathy as she has become the sister, she never had. Now, don't get too occupied up there in glory that you won't be there to welcome me when my turn comes. So many wonderful memories of this very special man. He was an exceptional person who made a difference in this world. .Loved Randy from the time I was 7  years old!! Never will forget the huge snake stuff animal he brought me!! A fun memory was driving around with the cousins packed into his really cool convertible. He had the radio blasting and we were singing along!! If Randy was around, smiles, laughs and fun was there too. Remember the dance picture, when he wore his ROTC Uniform and Kathy had a Tiara!! I thought  they were a royal couple. They have always been royalty to me!  Very Special Couple!! So special,that I wanted Kathy and Randy to have a important role in my daughter's life, as Alyssa's Godparent's. I wanted her to know kind, generous and loving people like Randy and Kathy.Remembering , a visit when Randy was ill,watching an interaction between Kathy and Randy....I told Alyssa" that is a example of true love!!"  Randy made this world a better place.His love and generosity will always remembered. During a very difficult time, Randy was the first relative to generously offer me help. My family and I have been blessed to have Randy in our lives.He will always be in our hearts! XOXO

Randy was a wonderful asset to SEDOL and the students in his caring capable hands. I have many fond memories of him, he will be missed. He was a true professional, but handled it all with his fine sense of humor. It was a privilege to have worked with him.

My deepest sympathy to Kathy, Holly and Patrick. Hugs to you all. My memories of Randy span from SEDOL to Cub Scouts to Warren Band. He always had a smile, a joke, a story or even a little whispered gossip on the side to make me laugh!  By best Cub Scout memories, besides the serious ones, were his inability to figure out the Bic lighter to light the candles! Never a dull moment with him! Band Booster times were the best, no matter where we were,  as long as we were proudly wearing our blue jackets! His love for and dedication to his wife, his kids and everyone's kids was so very special. Rest In peace, big guy. You've left a piece of your heart with many, many people over the years.

Words cannot describe the feelings of grief at the loss of our dear Randy. He was more than a cousin to me, more like a brother as we grew up together.  I feel fortunate to have visited with him on his last day, to talk to him and hold his hand and tell him I loved him. This day will be forever with me.  Please know that you all will be in my prayers and thoughts as you make your way through these next few days and months.  I know the process and it is difficult but just take it one day at a time.  Randy and I as well as our families spent so many happy times together and these memories will live on forever. No need to try to list them all here, it would fill many pages.  I guess now is the time to finally put away the pool balls for good.  I will always remember the smile on my and Randy's face with our secret expression "take off your shoes".  Our hearts are broken.

I knew Mr. Gunderson through his daughter, Holly. I have many fond memories of him during our high school and college years (and beyond) - during visits to their home, and to their cottage. He always made me feel welcome and put everyone at ease with a good joke and lots of humor. He will be dearly missed as he touched so many lives and meant so much to so many. He is truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

This is such a sad day. Dr. Randy Gunderson was giant in education. Not a giant in size, but with humor, compassion and people skills that seemed to be powered by some secret source that none of the rest of us could access. I never worked with Randy directly, which makes the effect that he had on the way I approached my job all the more amazing. Someone once said, "the best teacher is a good example". Randy was THE BEST example, and so very many are all the better for knowing him. My sincere condolences to his fine family. Rest well my friend and thank you.   Bob Ralston

I am saddened and heartbroken over the passing of my life long friend Randy. We became friends in 1963 when we met at Lane Tech and along with some mutual friends started a band called the Flares. Played over 1600 gigs together, mostly followed by a late night breakfast with the boys. Randy always had a joke or remenisced during these breakfasts. He rarely got through the joke or story before eveyone at our table and any tables close by were in stitches and laughing till we and they cried for a story that never got finished, because Randy himself was laughing so hard!

Fabulous music, stories and a life long friendship are just the tip of the iceburg. Vacations together. Disney, Busch Gardens,the cottage and the movie "Vacation"... you name it, our families had a blast.... living the dream.

Talked to each other almost every week for all those years since then and I was blessed to talk to him just a few days before his passing. The man put up an unequaled fight to stay with us and his family.

I would be remiss if I left out Kathy, who has been a pillar of strength for the duration. She fought bravely to make sure Randy got what was best and gave tirelessly year after year to fight for his health and dignity. What a strong woman and a role model for her children.

Randy...we will miss you every day, but we will never forget.
You were truly an amazing man, and friend to us all.

We are overwhelmingly saddened by Randy's passing.  He has been a wonderful friend for the past forty-four years.  This was a man who truly knew how to listen to others.  His marvelous sense of humor always kept things manageable at school.  Being a friend of Randy's has always been a blessing.  He found his joy in his beautiful wife and family.  Our hearts are heavy for all of you.

I knew Randy through my parents and remember his as being jovial, friendly and genuine. His band even played my Bar Mitzvah. He was a great human being and his spirit in this world will be missed. Peace

Randy is unforgettable!  He spread laughter wherever  he was.  He touched the hearts of every single person he came in contact with.  I never heard him speak an unkind word about anyone.  My best memories of Randy were at Powers.  An early encounter with Randy when he casually mentioned that he was a member of Mensa.  To believe or not to believe... I only wish I could have heard more of the stories and jokes he would spill out of his office. I became Linda's back-up.  He would get Linda laughing so hard she couldn't answer the phone.  During the summer, sometimes it would be just him and me in the office.  I could hear him in his office shouting his stories and jokes to me.  I seriously don't know how anyone got any work done with Randy around.  I do know that he made the work so much more enjoyable.  We looked forward to going to work and Randy was a big part of that reason.  He welcomed everyone into his heart and I am blessed that I was one of the recipients of that big heart!

I remember Mr G as a social worker when I was growing up. It was his kindness and smile that had created my memories of him. It was a blessing to know him.

Dr. Gunderson is great man with huge heart who care everyone in powers center. There will be no one like him it been privilege to know him i will miss him.

I had the great pleasure of working with Randy (or "Big Guy" as I affectionately called him) for many years. He had a heart of gold and it was always a better day if Randy was in the building. I will always remember that great big smile and special laugh.  My sister, Sheila, and I have worked at SEDOL for a long time, and Randy always joked with us about wanting to be a member of the Sister Club. So we inducted him into the club at his retirement party in 2004 (see picture). Randy truly cared about people, and most especially his family. He always spoke so fondly of Kathy, Holly, Patrick and the grandkids. Randy touched so many people, and he will be missed by all who knew him.

Randy was a man with a very large, caring,  heart whose care for others grew outwards in  ever extending circles. He cared about his staff and their families. He cared about the students and their families. He treasured his own family and friends, drawing these differing circles into his caring orbit. He catylysed the Power's "family" to care for each other. Kathy and family, I am praying that the care we experienced from Randy may now be experienced by you from us.

Oh Randy!  What a privilege to know and work for/with him! Randy was always filled with such joy and readily shared that joy with others.  (Seriously contagious, actually) Just like many others, Randy hired me at the age of 21 - fresh out of college.  And as long as we never got our hair cut, or got pregnant, Randy was content (lol).  - Despite getting my hair cut several times and having 3 children, Randy was always supportive and encouraging.  He encouraged us professionally and personally.  He genuinely wanted to know "how we were doing" and supported us as teachers, wives, parents, and friends.  Randy always had the students' best interest at heart.  The students loved him!  Randy frequently seemed to find the opportunity to mention that I used to be an acrobat in the circus (in college) and I enjoyed waiting on he and Kathy when they came to eat at Chili's (my side gig for many years).  I also enjoyed when a whole group of us would grab lunch at the Potesta's buffet across 60.  Oh how he will be missed. 
Kathy - I have said it before, and I will say it again - you are much an amazing testament of marriage.  You loved Randy WELL!  The last several years have been tough on you - but you continued loving, serving, providing and encouraging your life partner.  I know that there were times that you had to rely on strength from outside of yourself, but ultimately, it was YOU!  Holly and Patrick - you too are heroes.  Your dad loved you to the moon and back!  I have no doubt that you will pass along his legacy of joy and love.  Hugs and prayers to you all!

Randy did so much for the band program here at Warren, but just as important was his balanced perspective as the Booster President.
He helped me keep that perspective and a sense of humor in my early years at Warren, trying to re-build a marching program. I still hear him telling little incoming freshmen who were picking up their band t-shirt "Yea, I remember when I wore a medium".
I like to use that at band camp to this day, so his influence lives on at Warren.

Like a candle shining brightly was a bright and warm influence tin the lives of so many, colleagues, students, parents, family and friends.  He will be missed, but his light will shine on in our memories.

Kathy I just wanted to express how sorry I was to hear about Randy. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. I have not seen you or Randy in many years but I always remember how funny and full of life Randy was. The four of us had some fun times when we were young. Maybe in a few weeks/months when you are ready we could talk either by phone or meet in person. Take care of yourself. Somehow we find the strength to go on. Wishing your family only the best of memories during this time. I know Dr. Gunderson was well respected in the community and brought smiles to many faces over the years.

I was lucky to have just started with SEDOL and based at Powers before Randy retired.  While I did not directly work with him, Randy's energy, spirit, and especially his roaring laughter permeated throughout the building.  He was always a positive spark who obviously loved his students and staff.  He was and will always be missed!

I worked with Randy when I was assistant principal at Hawthorn Middle School.  He was the smartest, funniest, most caring man.  The world has truly lost a great man.

So sorry to hear of Randy's passing, I know he was well loved by many.  My mom Mary Hirsch spoke of him often and always with great affection.  You have my deepest sympathies.

Randy will always be remembered for his outgoing personality and funny jokes. He was always the life of the party and had a great sense of humor. He was always so kind and loving to everyone.  We will always have great memories of fun family parties spent together through the years. From Christmas Round Robins to Cousin  Get Togethers . He will be missed deeply by us all. I was privileged to have Randy as my boss the very first year that I became a teacher. I so fondly remember how he made us all laugh, and how much he enjoyed hearing our stories. It was a pleasure to know him. Even though my time at John Powers was short, he made a lasting impression.

Dr. G was a larger-than-life presence at Powers while I was a student there from 1983 - 1994, and I have often thought about him over the years. I am not surprised to learn that he's reached so many people through different avenues. He demonstrated a contagious love of life, and the example he set at Powers was deeply appreciated.

A true gentleman with such a wicked sense of humor! He was a joy to work with and will be remembered for his genuine, caring personality.

I was 21 years old when I called Randy and asked if there were any job openings at Powers. His response was, "Can you start tomorrow?" That's how I joined my new family in the DHH program. Randy was the heart and soul of this family. He had a heart of gold, an infectious laugh, and a caring spirit. Randy was my boss for almost 20 years, but more importantly, he was my friend. He was there to celebrate the happiest moments in my life and there to comfort during the difficult times. Some of my favorite work memories are from our weekly lunch meetings at the high school which were always filled with laughter. Kathy, Holly, and Patrick: Randy touched so many lives. He was a good, good man and Surf and I count ourselves lucky to have known him. His greatest pride was his family; he loved you all so much. I hope your many memories bring you comfort.

Randy, our dear sweet friend
I am writing this note as a heartfelt thank you for the privilege of calling you and Kathy our dear friends for well over a quarter century.  As I write this I'm thinking of what it was that made us so look forward to being together and the experiences the 4 of us shared. Things like going to the movies and seeing one of those mind numbing stupid films that made you laugh louder and longer than anyone in the theater. I must admit that I laughed also not just at the film but frankly because I got such enjoyment in watching and listening to you. I'll bet, as a matter of fact I know, there were times that Kathy and JoAnn were rolling their eyes and searching for two seats away from us.  We generally went to the movies on Wednesdays because next door was a Bakers Square which meant "Pie Rush Wednesday".  That always put a little extra bounce in your step.  I will fess up to the fact that I always laughed (on the inside of course) at the look on Kathy's face when you ordered the Brownie Ala Mode pie for dessert.  We both loved your stories Randy.  Especially the one of you and Kathy on a train somewhere in Asia without the plumbing necessary to provide for a carefree trip.  I'm laughing as I write this.   To this day I believe the toast you made at Holly and Marks wedding was the best I've ever heard.  It was funny beyond words, it was heartfelt and it was filled with such love and affection.  I've never seen a prouder dad or husband.  The jokes you told over the years. Oh my goodness.  We laughed till we cried. Had you not been an educator you could have easily made a handsome living as the funniest drummer on the planet.  We will miss boating at your cabin on the "SS Gunderson".  Even when your health became a challenge you maintained that sunny sense of humor.  JoAnn just loved bringing you hard candy (sugarless of course) because she so much enjoyed the smile on your face,  When we got permission from Kathy to bring Portillo's to our visit it was so wonderful to watch you light up.  Yo lite up our lives Randy.  You set an example for all of us A loving and devoted husband to your beautiful Kathy, a proud father and father in law and a gushing grandpa.  This world is a better place because of you old friend.  You impacted so many people in such a positive way.  JoAnn and I will miss your smile and your laugh but rest assured you will always be in our hearts.  Wherever you are now go ahead and have a beef sandwich dipped, a large order of fries and a Brownie Ala Mode pie for dessert.

Our sincere condolences to Kathy and the Gunderson family.  While we didn't see each other quite as often in recent years, our friendship with Randy and Kathy goes back over 50 years.  What we will remember most is Randy's laugh.  It was infectious. We're reminded of the time that we went to see a movie with Randy and Kathy.  Randy found the movie especially funny and he would continue to laugh long after the scene had passed.  Half of the audience around us would roar every time they heard Randy trying to stifle an untimely laugh. I am deeply saddended to hear about Dr. G's passing away. He was a wonderful man with a huge heart. He loved to make everyone laugh but at the same time he was always looking out for you.  May the memories hold deep inside your heart, help to comfort you.. You all are in my prayers.

Though I never worked in the same building as Randy, I would run into him from time to time at the old SEDOL building.  I would be there doing the mail for my building and who knows what he was doing there!  Usually he'd be going from office to office to visit with everyone, and there was always laughter.  That's what I remember most about him, how special he made you feel.  He would include everyone around him in on whatever was being talked about.  He was the epitome of a "people person" and had the ideal job at Powers to hone his skill!  By reading all the other condolences here, it's obvious his staff and the students that were blessed to work with him, loved him very much.  Peace to the family.

I am certain that anyone whoever met Randy was immediately drawn to him. He was a force of nature.....bright, talented, funny, always smiling. He was genuine, a very caring person and an incredibly GOOD human being.

Unfortunately, I never had a pleasure of working with Dr. Gunderson. However, I was fortunate enough that I was able to meet him and talk to him during progressive dinners.He was very curious about my family, background,... He was such a nice and funny man.

I knew Randy since I was a small child.. He was my social worker.... To me... he was a giant but he always made me laugh. He see me all the times from small child to Senior High School.. He always believe in me.. He wrote me a wonderful recommendations for college. He was someone that I can look forward to talk to.. I am sorry that he is gone... Randy was a awesome person.  Randy has warm heart, compassion and he laughed a lot! <3 He just brought tears to my eyes and heart. My heart is sad that he has gone home to God.. He was someone that you can count on. He came to my dad's funeral many years ago... He has a big heart. I will miss you and I am glad I got a chance to chat with you on VP. You have care about me a lot than I ever give you credit for. Randy was an amazing man and a true pleasure to work with during his years at Hawthorn. My deepest sympathies and prayers to his family and friends.

Randy was so much a piece of our Power's Center Family.  His humor, laughter and spirit will be greatly missed!  I treasure the memories I have of him and of course, that means Powers Center.  To Kathy, Holly, Patrick and children I send my sincerest wishes for healing at this sad time.

I want Kathy, Holly and Mark, Patrick and Kim, to know that Randy was a special person to the Barrett family, and to me especially.  I first met Randy when I held him in my arms at his baptism and wondered what a godfather should do.  Randy was a "blue baby" and had many health problems growing up, so as he matured, it was an inspiration to see him conquer every obstacle with grace and good humor.  That great sense of humor and his jokes never left him, as so many persons have noted.  He never let Mary and me forget how he bounced the beejeebers out of us while towing us around Third Lake on a rubber raft.  So now Randy has left us, but we have stacks of photos and so many wonderful memories of him.  We thank God for Randy and the example of a life well-lived.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.  Randy always made me feel welcomed at Hawthorn, even though he was not in my building.

The word Legacy fits perfectly in remembering Randy. His impact on his staff and students created a school others could admire. The Powers School has produced some of the brightest more self-aware students any school could imagine, deaf or hearing. These are young adults knowingly or not, are passing on his kindness and zest for life. He was a role model for us parents as well; I am a better person for knowing him. Randy was a joy to work with. He loved his students and inspired his staff to develop winning strategies despite seemingly insurmountable challenges. He will be sorely missed.

I worked the summer school program at Powers as a secretary for Dr. Gunderson many years ago.  He was the nicest man and always uplifting, no matter what.  His truest love was his wife and family and always bragged about them.  We had a laugh about pretzels.  He snacked on them and called "Rold Gold" the Cadillac of pretzels.  I have never been able to look at pretzels since without thinking of him. Our sincere sympathy to the family from Susan, Larry, Amy and Laura Ludovice.  He will be greatly missed.

Such a beautiful person inside and out.  He was so full of love and laughter.  There are not too many people that touch the lives of so many others.  I remember the first time I met Randy, it was my first meeting as a parent on the Hawthorn PTO board. I remember laughing and laughing at that meeting (and every other meeting he attended).  He had such a wonderful gift of bringing laughter and warmth into people's lives.  He was genuine, sincere and so, so welcoming to everyone.  Please know that your family is my thoughts and prayers. Randy was such a huge part of our families lives during all of those Warren Bands Events, whether it was Marching Band, Symphonic Band or Jazz Band - the Gunderson family was always behind the scenes. Randy will be greatly missed. His broad smile and warmth was genuine. His family and mine bonded following Danielle's and Ryan's engagement and marriage. He and Kathy made it clear to Maria and me that we were all family. We enjoyed the family get togethers and the stories we shared. We took the pontoon out on the water on bright sunny days that will forever be some of my best times. We always felt welcome and that we were a part of the family. Randy was always cheerful although he was experiencing bad health. We considered him a member of our family and will forever cherish the memories. Thank you so much for those memories. Dr G to me was a kind gentle towering giant as a student since I was 3 years old all the way through 8th grade. Always was very kind to people around him. Still remember his laugh the way he grabbed his belly and laughed and laughed making me laugh too. Walking through the halls with a huge smile and a huge hello. He was an extrordinary leader who believed in every single individual: students, families and all staff. He empowered us to do our best and he was an awesome role model for many.

I am so sorry for your loss. Randy was an amazing boss but more importantly an amazing person. His laugh was contagious and he had the greatest sense of humor!  May he rest in peace.

Thinking of Randy always has, and always will, make me smile!  He was a genuinely good person and he had the greatest sense of humor!  He brightened any room he entered!  My favorite memories of Randy are the times he'd come to do my teacher evaluations.  I'd do about 5 minutes of teaching and he'd spend the rest of the time shooting the breeze with my students!  He was such a natural - kids just loved him - adults too!!  I feel lucky to have known him!

Please know that you have our deepest sympathy!   Our hearts are forever "touched" because we knew Randy!   What a dear, sweet, funny, wonderful man he was!   Our hearts are now breaking with yours!  But...we will always have such fond memories!   Seeing the outpouring of love and support - it's just a beautiful tribute to Randy.   We were all thankful to call him "our principal" but even more thankful to call him "our friend"!   One thing we'll always remember Randy for was his love for his family and for our families!   Even when he wasn't feeling well these last few years...he always took the time to ask how our family was doing!   It was an honor and privilege to have known Randy!

Kathy, Holly, Patrick and family,

My heart is overwhelmingly sad for your loss. There are not enough words here to describe the love, humor, passion and dedication Randy gave selflessly each and every day. His laugh was infectious and will be missed. I could not have asked for a better boss especially right out of college and beyond. He has left his mark on so many hearts and am incredibly grateful for the stamp he left on mine as he'll never be forgotten. I hope these memories put a smile on your face as he always did ours.

I celebrate Randy's love for his family, his friends, his students, old cars and loud drums.  He had a heart as big as the sky and an angel to walk him home.  My love and condolences go out to his family.  Randy made a difference in the world.

Dear Kathy, kids and grandkids: my heart is truly broken knowing that Randy has passed. Lifelong friends are difficult to find and keep but knowing him was fun and a pleasure. When we would see each other walking to Mayfair elementary school, we'd both wave and meet in the playground. Whenever we'd see each other later in life, we weren't men who hadn't seen each other for a while. We were boys still hanging from the jungle gym. I still can't believe he's gone. Randy will always be one of my favorite people in the world.  No man was funnier, kinder, or better at being a friend.  His work at John Powers Center was so important and made great memories for all who were educated or worked there.

Dr. G was a mentor to us all- students and staff alike.  He had a profound influence on the education of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in Lake County.  A tough job...that he did with a smile and a joke- but always putting children first.

What a wonderful man. He was definitely loved by everyone. I consider myself lucky to have known him. Every memory I have of him is a good one.

I was so saddened to hear of Randy's passing.  He had a laugh I can still hear, and the heart of a giant. When he hired me, he said the most important thing is "enjoy the children", a statement he voiced at every school function. He truly enjoyed every child! All of us..family, friends, teachers, interpreters, secretaries, students, support staff, etc  have wonderful stories about Randy. He will be missed, but always remembered and loved.

Dear Kathy, Holly, Patrick, and family members,
My life is so much richer for having known Randy.  I met him my first year at SEDOL, 1974, and he was already somehow larger than life:  funny, warm, bright.  It was a pleasure working with him and for him.  His compassion and deep connection with our students and their families was unmistakable, and in our minds, he really WAS "Principal of the Year," over and over. It has been heart-wrenching to see his health deteriorate over these latter years, but his spirits remained high because of his loving family and friends.  I can only imagine the loss you have suffered, perhaps lightened by knowing that he knew he was deeply loved, and that his suffering is now finished. The world has lost one of the great ones, and we will all miss him very much.  Always remember that the Powers/SEDOL family is still part of your family, and we want to keep you in our lives as we go forward.  With much affection from Sue and Dave.

I was his student during his social worker year from 1970-75. He was just so wonderful and lift up all the kids to their goals. During my years he always come by once a week with our classmates and provides sodas We the girls take turns to bring desserts talk many jokes and I keep hearing his laughing   We had a blast as taking all of us to picnic, to his summer home beaching boating skiing.  Any events he hosted always be joyful. He always have a great father role model for kids when kids don't have parents around. He encouraged kids to go for their dreams. I will always cherish the memories all the years we enjoyed. I wanted to sympathize to the family for the loss of the great man. He may be gone but never in heart.  We love you.   God Bless Randy.

Randy was my boss. But, most importantly, he was my friend and became Don's friend, as well. The hole that has been left because of his passing will never be filled, but we are blessed with wonderful memories. His kindness, love of his family and others, determination to never give up, quick wit, smile and laughter will live forever in our hearts. We love and miss you, dear friend.

To Dr. Gunderson family, 

I would like to share my stories about Dr. G.  He was my social worker from Pre-K to high school even though he was the principal for Powers Center when I was in high school.  He always had a smile every time he saw me and say, "Heeeeyyy Rosemaaaary! How are yoooou". I would either smile or laugh because that is so him.  He would light up the room when he came in. He would always laugh when I said something funny. His laugh is very contagious.  

I remember when I was in 4th grade, "group time" with Dr. G and Mr. Steve P. was my favorite time. My classmates and I would play games or sit in a circle talking about things in life. I remember one day, someone asked how our ears work and why our ears didn't work. Mr. Steve and Dr. G came up with an idea -- instead of using a picture and explain. They would put us in a line acting a part of ear such as eardrum, three bones, cochlear and nerve. When a sound was made they would shake  (like vibrations) us in order of how the ear worked - we would laugh and ask them to do it again!   That was the best lesson because it was visual and physical - I will always know how ears works and why my ears does not work because of that. 

When we moved in Power School, he had an office on second floor. He would take me out of my class to that room. He often would open up his briefcase and bribe me with cookies or candies. I admit, it did work most of the time.  

One day during my 7th grade year - I was having issues with my emotions - anger, confusion, frustration, and sad because my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I started to scream and refused to listen to my teachers in the hallway - I was sent to the conference room to calm down. There, I just broke down crying. Someone sent Dr. G in the room.  He just sat there and rubbed my back. He did not say anything.  He just let me cry for a long time. That was just what I needed. He did it by being there for me. I felt better after that.  That is something I will always treasure forever.  

He has touched so many people, period.

Randy was such a kind, amazing man who truly put kids first. I loved that during my interview process to become a teacher at Powers, his focus was on my experience in the ISU marching band! He was so kind and supportive! I loved having his and your support for some of my singing gigs over the years. I will never forget him. A truly wonderful, amazing man. I was blessed and honored to know him.

There are no words to describe my sadness. Randy was there from my first day at Sedol to my last. His humor made the job so enjoyable and his support through some very difficult times in my life as  a social worker, my boss and my friend kept me going. Watching his pain the last few years was heartbreaking and now knowing he's up in heaven making Mario laugh gives me some comfort. Keep all your great memories in your heart even though they hurt. We were all so blessed to know him.

Dr. Gunderson, you were the best principal ever. Always smiling and always took the time to say hello to every student. You added so much to John Powers Center and all the deaf students there. May you be at peace now.
