

Russell (Randy) Gunderson, age 69, of Gurnee IL passed away peacefully on Monday March 13, 2017. Born in Chicago on August 13, 1947 to the late Russell and Orrell Gunderson. Beloved husband to his ever-devoted wife, Kathy Newman, who he married on December 19, 1970. Loving father to Holly Harms (Mark) and Patrick (Kimberly). Adored Grandpa of four: Lauren, Christopher, and Kaitlyn Harms and Liliana Gunderson. Brother to Bruce (Kelly). Dear brother-in-law to Bob (Mary Beth) Newman and a caring, fun-loving uncle to the Gunderson and Newman children. Wonderful cousin to his other “brothers,” Terry (late Denise) Carr and the late Denny (Carol) Carr.
Randy attended Lane Tech HS and Loyola University in Chicago. In high school, his love of music grew. He perfected his drumming skills and started his band, The Flares, performing for over 40 years at weddings and parties. After receiving his Masters in Social Work, Randy began his 34 year career at the Special Education District of Lake County (SEDOL) working for 9 years as a Social Worker with the deaf and hard of hearing children in Lake County, IL. After he completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology, he spent the next 25 years as the Principal for the John Powers Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Vernon Hills, IL.
Randy was also very involved with the Band Program at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, IL. He was an officer of the Warren Band Boosters for 8 years where he helped to organize fund raisers that provided thousands of dollars to benefit the Band Program. He was also a volunteer parent who helped the students on the football field and chaperoned many band competitions, locally, out of state and in Canada. The students affectionately called him “Band Dad.”
In all aspects of his life, Randy brought his joy, his sense of humor, his infectious laughter, his love of life and love of people. Whenever you were with Randy, your day would be brighter, and you knew you would have a smile on your face as he told one of his many stories.
Randy will be remembered as a very special and loving man who deeply cared for everyone who crossed his way, especially his family, friends and the staff, children and parents of the deaf and hard of hearing children he was so devoted to. His smile and laughter will never be forgotten.
The Visitation will be at Marsh Funeral Home, 305 N. Cemetery Rd, Gurnee, IL on Sunday, March 19 from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The Funeral Service will be at St. Gilbert’s Catholic Church at 301 E. Belvedere Rd. Grayslake, IL at 10:00 am. with a visitation at church between 9:00 am to 10:00 am. Burial immediately following at Ascension Cemetery, Libertyville, Il.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Randy Gunderson Memorial Fund, in care of 5/3 Bank, 7500 Grand Avenue, Gurnee, IL 60031. This fund will benefit the children in the deaf and hard of hearing program of the Special Education District of Lake County where Randy was the Principal for 25 years.
