Allene E. Feldman passed away on Sunday, October 2, 2022, quite suddenly, in her apartment on Manhattan’s West Side. She was seventy-six. She leaves behind a large circle of friends and family who loved and respected her.
Allene was an influential educational editor who guided to successful completion many projects in both print and video. She worked for many years at McGraw-Hill and later as an independent editor, leading and consulting on projects for several New York, Ohio, and California firms.
She was born on July 19, 1946 to George and Violet Feldman and raised in the Bronx. She completed her BA in English at CCNY and began a career as a teacher in the NYC public school system. After a few years, she left NYC to study and work in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she earned a master’s degree in English at the University of Santa Clara. She continued working and studying at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She decided to pursue a career in commercial publishing rather than academia and in the mid-1980s she returned to the West Side, a place she always knew as home.
Allene had the opportunity to travel in Europe and Africa. She delighted in the unexpected adventures that arose on her trips and would tell stories about the people she met, the places she visited, and the odd, often funny (in retrospect), situations she found herself in.
She sought the truth in everything she did. She had an unerring instinct for determining right and wrong. She earned the love and respect of her friends and colleagues by her kindness and consideration while not compromising truth and right. Two other aspects of her recent work brought her great joy: she began a series of appearances as an extra in on-location productions in NYC and she created a business consultancy in retail clothing inventory and marketing.
Allene E. Feldman is survived by her sister and her nephew as well as many other family members who are now scattered across the country. She is also survived by two ex-husbands but she had no children. And she left many friends who will miss her wisdom, her wit, her wonderful sense of humor (and irony), and the delight she took in life.
