Beloved husband of Esther for 54 years. Devoted father of Deborah Goldberg and Marc Goldberg. Loving father-in-law of Michael Schoenwald. Cherished grandfather of Rachel and Daniel. Dear brother of Marilyn Perelman.
Dr. Goldberg was very involved in his community serving on the Historic Commission, Environmental Commission and Planning Board in the Borough of Closter. He served as a Lt. and medical doctor in the U.S. Navy in Japan from 1957-1959. After retiring from his practice as an internist, hematologist, and oncologist, he devoted more time to his passion for ceramics. He discovered Japanese folk pottery while serving in the U.S. Navy. This stimulated his search for an American equivalent, which resulted in an exhibition of selections from his broad, historical collection of American stoneware at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1985. He has lectured on American stoneware, African-American slave pottery, and art tiles at several institutions. He has written and co-written several articles on American ceramics, including on the slave potter Dave.
