Beatrice Greenwald on September 28 at the age of 97, affectionately known as Bea, is survived by her sons, Steven (Mariza), Jules (Eve), and her grandchildren David, Hannah (Stephen), Alissa, and Emily. Bea was predeceased by her husband, David, her daughter Susan as well her brother Jack Rubin and sister Esther Simon.
Beatrice was born on February 22, 1921 in Warsaw, Poland to Lillian and Wolfe Rubin. Her family immigrated to the United States, through Ellis Island, in 1923.
During World War II, she worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. At the conclusion of the war, she sailed to Europe, where she married her husband David - the trip made even more impressive by the fact that she toured the continent with a broken leg. She and David were involved in multiple efforts to further their political beliefs that included the Civil Rights Movement and the anti-Vietnam war movement.
Bea worked for over 20 years at the College Entrance Examination Board, retiring in 1991. After David’s death in 1979, she travelled the world, including multiple trips to China. In addition to travel, she enjoyed playing bridge, was a member of an investment club, Temple Emanu-el of Closter, New Jersey, volunteered at the National Council of Jewish Women Thrift Shop located in Bergenfield, New Jersey and loved to cook - a passion she passed down to her grandchildren. She loved putting together an outfit, was always immaculately dressed, and had impeccable taste in clothing, furniture, and art.
A memorial service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Temple Emanuel in Closter, New Jersey. Shiva will be observed on Wednesday [5pm-8:00pm], Thursday [5pm-8pm], and Friday [4pm-7pm] at Beatrice’s home which is located at 240 E. Palisades Avenue, Apartment C17, Englewood, New Jersey. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bea’s life. Flowers and condolences can be sent to Beatrice’s home, 240 E. Palisades Avenue, Apartment C17, Englewood, NJ 07631.
