With deep sadness we share the loss of David Solomon Gruskin Z”L. David was born at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, NJ to parents Mara Steinberg from Brooklyn, NY, and Curt Gruskin of Bellmore, Long Island. David resided in Teaneck, and Petach Tikva, Israel. He is mourned by his parents, his three amazing children, his sister Amy, brother in law Roy, nephew and niece, cousins, aunts and uncles, friends, patients and colleagues.
David studied undergraduate at Machon Meir, and earned his Masters of Social Work with Honors from Touro College, N.Y.C. Next, he earned his credentials for Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). David trained at the Beck Institute under Dr. Aaron Beck in Bala Cynwyd, PA, and NJI, the New Jersey Institute of Psychoanalysis, in Teaneck, NJ.
David chose clinical work and established himself as a distinguished clinician and psychotherapist admired by colleagues and patients for his wisdom and therapy outcomes, but more importantly, for his compassion and caring, which his patients seemed to have sensed. David loved his work. Yes, he did have a talent for it, but also he was industrious in advancing his knowledge. David had a bright mind and was an excellent researcher. On his night table and living room end tables he had low piles of reading material....scientific books, articles and journals that he read for pleasure and erudition…works that he acquired from all over - book stores, mentors, subscriptions, airport gift shops. At the time of his death, he had completed all his course work in psychoanalysis and was getting ready to submit his paper. He was devoted to this challenging profession, and committed to his patients.
David had an affinity for the natural world. He tended plants, multiple fish aquariums, and two dogs. If David were on vacation, he wanted Chance and Munchie, (his two sibling dogs) to also have the best dog vacations. The dogs would go to “the country ” living with the same dependable dog sitter each visit, who sent David lots of videos of Chance and Munchie happily running and playing in wide open spaces, or relaxing with dog friends.
David had an artistic side which enriched his life. His home bore a collection of paintings. He appreciated and collected textiles and hand crafted items, including furniture.
David was an amazing, loving, generous, and proud Dad to his three remarkable children, Hodi, Yosef Aharon, and Michal. They will remember and love him always. He was a fun, nurturing, generous and adored uncle to Nate and Abigail, a best friend and confidante to his grieving sister, and will be missed as a brother and friend to his grieving brother in law. He honored his grandparents during their lifetime and beyond - learning with his grandpa for his Bar Mitzvah, being Shomer when his grandfather left this world, and bestowing his grandfather’s name on his son. He was a tremendous help to his parents, whether building the sukkah each year, or driving them around Israel sharing many fun times. We are indeed fortunate and grateful to have a treasure of many beautiful memories and memorable photos to keep David close.
May David Gruskin’s example - to never embarrass anyone, and to do good deeds, often in secret, be an inspiration for how we may conduct our lives.
May our beloved David forever be in our hearts and minds, and may he always be remembered as a blessing.
