We are very saddened to share that Dr. Debra Kate Tillinger of Kerhonkson, New York passed away unexpectedly on November 3rd, 2022. Born April 17, 1982, Dr. Tillinger held a PhD in Ocean and Climate Physics from Columbia University and taught courses on physics, natural disasters, and oceanography at a variety of schools including Marymount Manhattan College, Touro College, and the City University of New York. She also served as an educator on climate change, a cause very dear to her, at the American
Museum of Natural History.
Debra was a passionate educator. She had a knack for explaining difficult concepts in simple terms that resonated with her students. Over the past year, she worked to revise the online Climate Change course at the American Museum of Natural History. The course will be a reflection of the way she taught and a lasting legacy.
In addition to her formal curriculum work, Debra also presented easy-to understand concepts on climate science through her self-created character, “Dr. Mermaid” at a variety of venues including Burning Man, the Gratitude Migration Festival, and Brooklyn’s House of Yes. Debra was a founding member of the
Mermaid Lagoon Ocean Benefit; an organization that has been raising money for ocean-related charities and promoting love and understanding of the ocean for more than a decade.
Debra was a wonderfully colorful and curious person. She brought her passion for science and artistic spirit to life as a fire performer and dancer. She enjoyed traveling and learning about new cultures; impressively visiting all of Earth’s seven (7) continents. After moving to the Hudson Valley, Debra enjoyed spending time with her beloved ducks and hiking on nearby trails.
She is survived by her husband Richard Miller, sister Sara Tillinger Wolkenfeld (David), sister Renee Tillinger Barrett (Brandon), and six (6) nephews and a niece. She was preceded in death by her parents Jane Brodwin Tillinger and Dr. Martin H. Tillinger.
Funeral services will be held 11Am on Monday, November 7, 2022 at Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors, 402 Park Street, Hackensack, NJ 07601. Burial will take place at Garden of Memories/ Beth El Cemetery, 735 Forest Avenue, Paramus, NJ 07652.
