Sending my love and wishes to your family.  I am studying the American Museum of Natural History - Our Earth's Future and learning about climate change.  Debra continues to inspire and educate.

I met Debra in... Antarctica in 2010.  She was the light of our science expedition  - regaling us with stories as we were creating our own on the Larissa Expedition. She was bold. She was brave. She was a current of electricity and made a lasting impression on me. I miss her dearly. Rest in Peace, my friend.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Debra’s passing. As an educator with the American Museum of Natural History’s Seminars on Science program, I had the privilege of working with Debra in the Ocean System course. As the course scientist, Debra shared personal experiences and extensive knowledge of the field of oceanography that helped the learners appreciate the complex ocean system. She unselfishly shared her resources and was available to help even when we were not directly working together. Her love of life was contagious!  My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Debra's life and mine only intersected occasionally since the one class we worked on together years ago, but the impression she made as among the very most vibrant scientists and educators I've been fortunate enough to work with has always stuck with me.

This is a poem that Debra and I discussed in a hot tub at some point. I was thinking of getting a line tattooed. I'll miss her so much. Her memory will inspire me and so many others to pass on her message.

I fondly remember Debra as a young child in our nursery school and her mother, Jane , as a co-teacher. Debra also served as a mother‘s helper to me with my young son. My sincere condolences go out to Debra’s family. I am so sorry for your deep loss.

I am shocked and devastated by this news. Debra was beautiful and brilliant in every sense of the word, an outstanding student and natural teacher who lit up the room whenever she entered and from whom I learned something new with every encounter. 
May her memory be a blessing and continue to inspire all who knew and loved her.  


My journey through dance has expanded my world in so many directions. I've met fantastic people that I can call my family and have made a big impression on me. One of them was Debra Tillinger. 

I met Debra in New York through a class about 10 years ago. We had an exercise where we were to write about the day we were born, but to tell it differently. I remember hers the most from that class. 

"I emerged from the world's oldest rock with sirens blaring."

In plain words, Debra was born in New York City and was transported via ambulance. In one sentence, she blended her backgrounds in science and myth. Rest easy, Debra.
