Edna was educated in the Conemaugh Valley School system. After graduating with honors from Conemaugh Valley High School, she moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and worked for the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. While living in Harrisburg, she met Richard Timmons, a young soldier in the United States Army. They married on October 17, 1959 at the Mount Sinai Institutional Baptist Church in Conemaugh, Pennsylvania and built their life and family together.
Edna was a gentle, generous woman of action. She did not talk much; but she was always on the move, making things happen. She believed everyone could make a difference and had something valuable to contribute. If she saw a need, she tried to address it. She was a caregiver for family- members and friends, serving in any way needed. Her life reflected her faith, intellect, respect, fellowship, commitment and hard work. She served as role model and mentor for many.
Edna built a career in banking. She joined US Bank (now Ameriserv) as a teller in 1967. She was promoted numerous times and served as the Branch Manager, eventually becoming the Assistant Cashier, making her the bank’s highest ranking African American executive. She retired from that position in 1995, after 28 years of service during which she had nearly perfect attendance. She missed one sick day because she had laryngitis and could not talk!
Edna was a graduate of Cambria Rowe Business College. She also earned a certificate from the American Institute of Banking at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Edna’s professional background was enriched through a broad range of volunteer work with community, civic, professional and religious organizations. She was a life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She was a lifelong member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church where she served faithfully as a Steward and Treasurer until she relocated to Hampton, Virginia where she joined with the New Beech Grove Baptist Church.
Edna remained in Hampton until ill health necessitated a move to Hackensack, New Jersey in 2011. She maintained that same spirit of generosity and gentleness during a long period of illness and disability. On May 15th, Edna received her call from the Lord to join her beloved parents, Silas and Elizabeth Moses, her husband, Richard Timmons, her sister, Ida Ross, her brothers, Silas Moses, Jr.. Benjamin Moses, Fred Moses and Alexander Moses.
Celebrating her life and legacy are her children, Sandra Timmons (Hackensack, NJ) and Sharon Brown (Hampton, VA), her grandchildren, Shannon Timmons (Hampton, VA) and Denzil and his wife, Adrienne Brown(Williamsburg, VA), her brother, Edward Moses (South Boston, VA) and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
