Marvin (Mendel) was born in the Bronx to Abe and Sarah (Goldstein) Friedman on May 10, 1935. His older sister, Roslyn Marcus z''l, lived in Teaneck, NJ for many years. His younger sister Fran Gerber, lives in Hamilton Township, NJ.
Marvin went to a NYC trade school to become a butcher, which is what he did until he enlisted in the US Army at age 21. When Marvin returned from post-war Germany (1956-1958), he worked in sales -- first selling sewing machines door to door, and then selling new tires. He eventually owned a tire business with a partner. He then became a NYC taxi driver, like his father Abe, which he continued until he was 79 years old.
Marvin lived for 50 years within walking distance of the United Nations, which was very fitting for someone who had a lifelong passion for history, geography and politics. He moved across town to VillageCare in 2017, which became his home. He was very glad to be home from the VA Hospital last week before he died.
Marvin leaves behind beloved family -- his sister Fran Gerber (Jerry), nieces Hilary Marcus (Jonathan Magaziner and children Noah and Maayan) and Alissa Gerber (Michael Young and son Jack), Susan Warren (Rich and daughter Rachel), Yechiel Marcus (Esther and children Eliana, Avishai, Zvi, Hadar, Zechariah and Chinanit, as well as many grandchildren), Paul Gerber (Jaime and children Peri and Maya), cousin Stan, and many other family and friends who will miss him dearly.
