Sandy was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth Katz. She is survived by her daughter Wendy Augustensen stepson Douglas Katz (wife Laura) and her sister Lillian Mattes.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brittany & Annika Augustensen and step grandchildren Jillian Rubenoff & Katie Katz, her nieces Sharon Peters and Sheri Becker and nephew Jay Mattes.
Sandy was born in Bayonne, NJ to Charles and Dora Pasternak. Sandy was the youngest of three sisters, the first being Regina (Katzoff) and the second Lillian (Mattes). Sandy loved growing up at the Jersey shore and has fond memories of her childhood in Belmar with her sisters and friends. During her summers at the shore, she loved working at the Belmar department store helping women pick out the latest fashions.
Sandy graduated from Asbury Park High School and continued her studies at Monmouth College and then, always industrious, she looked for work.
Sandy first worked on Wall Street for Spencer Trask after that she worked in the office of Demarest High School and then Kongsberg North American in Leonia, NJ. For the latter part of her career, she worked at Metro Tag in NJ. She always enjoyed the busy nature of all her jobs and helping to keep the operations running smoothly.
But most importantly, Sandy was about family. With her first husband Steve Yablon she welcomed her daughter Wendy and in 1981 connected with her future husband Kenneth Katz.
Sandy and Ken enjoyed their active social life in Bergen County celebrating endless mitzvahs with their many friends and family and enjoying Friday night dinners at their favorite restaurants. Together they loved handicapping horses at the racetrack and traveling to visit tracks around the northeast. Sandy was a proud member of Temple Emanuel of Woodcliff Lake, NJ and enjoyed hosting for all the Jewish holidays.
Sandy was overjoyed with the addition of her two granddaughters, Brittany and Annika. And she loved taking her granddaughters on special trips and would do anything to help them with school and their studies. Sandy was a beloved grandmother and aunt.
After retirement Sandy filled her days enjoying the many friendships she developed in her River Vale, NJ community. She was busy every day with card games, birthday parties, Mahjongg, bingo, nail appointments and endless special events. She enjoyed being known as the unofficially “Activities Director” at her Holiday Farms community.
Sandy was always happy to help a friend or family member in need and she had countless numbers of friends from every chapter of her life.
The Family wishes to thank the staffs of Hackensack Hospital, the Jewish Home of Rockleigh and Villa Marie Claire for their love and care.
Funeral Services will be held at Gutterman and Musicant Jewish Funeral Directors at 402 Park St., Hackensack, NJ at 12:30 pm on Monday, Oct. 6th. Burial will immediately follow the service at Beth El Cemetery at 735 Forest Ave in Paramus, NJ.
