Wendy Lori Ann Kelly/Heller, age 64, passed away on April 23, 2025, in Teaneck, New Jersey. Born on March 7, 1961, in New York City, Wendy lived a vibrant and multifaceted life that touched countless people across communities and generations.
Wendy grew up in New Milford, New Jersey, in a warm and wacky home. Her two older brothers found the perfect balance of lovingly picking on her and guiding her through life's ups and downs. Her two immigrant parents (her mother was a Holocaust Survivor) imbued unwavering values in her, like the importance of family, fighting for equal rights for all, and always having an open door, ear, and heart to those who might need it. Those who knew Wendy will know that her childhood memories are important to her, a key aspect of her adult personality. She always looked back on her childhood in New Milford fondly, and cherished the friends and memories she made there.
Throughout her life, Wendy embraced a wide range of professional pursuits with creativity and determination. She studied Theater at SUNY New Paltz with a focus on costume design, channeling her artistic spirit into her early career. She worked as a DJ for Heller Productions owned by her brother Peter, then worked in Advertising at The Record newspaper, then became a paralegal. Eventually, Wendy followed her entrepreneurial instincts and began working for herself. She could often be found scouting out unique items at estate sales and thrift stores, and selling vintage jewelry and other goods—a perfect fit for someone with an eye for the extraordinary. Along the way she took on various odd jobs, always leaving a lasting impression wherever she went.
Wendy was deeply rooted in the Teaneck community, where she became a beloved fixture over the years. She was an active member of the Teaneck Garden Club and served on the Shade Tree Committee, contributing to the town’s natural beauty and civic life. Wendy poured her energy into her daughters' world's. Throughout their childhood you could find her volunteering at school events, supporting soccer programs, and at Girl Scouts as a Troop Leader (she volunteered with Girl Scouts as a town service member years later). Her involvement reflected not only her love for her children but also her passion for building strong community ties.
Wendy is survived by her two daughters, Gail and Annabeth (Micah Smalley); her brothers Peter Heller (Monica) and Franklin Heller (Wendy Hirschberg); and her nieces and nephews Suze (Han), Alex, and Zach. She now joins her beloved parents Ilse and William in the great beyond.
Wendy was fortunate to have both her family of origin, and a chosen family that she cherished. Terry, Jackie (Nick), and Jamie Schile welcomed Wendy into their home and spent countless holidays and family outings with her. To Wendy, Terry was like a sister - and not just because they were often mistaken as such. She also found family in Terry's siblings Ron and Dawn (John).
Those who knew Wendy will remember her as a loving mother, sister, daughter, and friend—someone who never hesitated to speak up for what was right and dedicated her time and energy to anyone who could use a friend. Her warmth could light up any room; her generosity knew no bounds; and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life made her unforgettable.
Wendy’s presence will be deeply missed but forever cherished by those fortunate enough to have known her. May her memory bring comfort to all whose lives she touched.
