MACNUTT, Cathy Marjorie (Raymond) Halifax and Centreville, Digby County passed away in Halifax with her family by her side on August 22, 2020. Cathy was born in Digby on October 14, 1949, the eldest of three daughters of Keith and Freda “Sis” Raymond. She and her sisters, Janis and Melissa, were raised in a close-knit family in Centreville, Digby County.
The Raymond girls completed their education and lived and raised their children as an extended family in Halifax. At eight months, Cathy started walking and never looked back. She excelled in school winning the Anderson Trophy at her Digby High School graduation for Excellence in Sports and Academic Achievement. Cathy graduated from Acadia University with a B.A. in Economics and continued in a Masters degree in Economics at Dalhousie University. Cathy started her career as an Economist with the Department of Development, moving quickly to the position of Assistant Regional Director with Statistics Canada at age 26.
In 1980, she became the Deputy Minister of Consumer Affairs for the province of Nova Scotia and served in many capacities including interim Executive Director of the Human Rights Commission and Deputy Minister of the Women’s Directorate. Cathy was the first chair of the Halifax Harbour Clean-up Inc. and Chair of the NS Public Service Long Term Disability Trust Fund. In 1991, she was appointed as Deputy Minister of Health for Nova Scotia. Cathy and her family moved to Ottawa in 1994, for a position with the Canadian Red Cross. She became the Deputy National Director of Operations, Blood Services, responsible for the development and implementation of strategic planning. Returning to Nova Scotia in 1999, she worked as a Project Manager in Health Services Management, Atlantic Canada Network for Bioactive Compounds and as a Project Director for Geriatric Medicine Research. She was Vice President of Product Development and Customer Relations with the Dementia Guide Inc. Cathy made contributions to the community by serving on many boards: Vice Chair of the Board of Governors, Dalhousie University; Chair of the Corporate Fund Development Committee, Canadian Red Cross; and a member of Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health. She was an active volunteer for Nova Scotia Diabetes, Canadian Red Cross, United Way, Canadian Kidney Foundation, Halifax Board of Trade and University of King’s Heritage Society. She was an adherent member of St. Andrew’s United Church and a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Cathy’s greatest passion was her family and friends. She and her husband Michael raised four children, Justin, Jessica, Alexandra and Nick in Halifax. She drove to every sports practice, dance class, piano lesson and event for her children. She was a champion in their careers and life achievements. She was a devoted wife, a loving daughter, a loyal sister and friend, and a proud grandmother to Max and Zoë. She loved her nieces and nephews tremendously and loved being a great aunt to their children. Cathy was a very generous, caring, and thoughtful woman. Her favourite time of year being Christmas when her gift list was never-ending. Birthdays and special occasions were never missed. She loved to travel especially if there was a friend or family waiting at her destination.
She loved her home in Centreville, Digby County. She loved to sit at Sandy Cove beach even on a cold and foggy day saying “There’s no bad day at the beach”. Nova Scotia was her favourite place. Despite living with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), she persevered and made the most of each day. She enjoyed family gatherings, her daily walks, her garden, the Public Gardens, as well as any shopping excursions. Her determination was an inspiration to all those around her, including family, friends, neighbours, and health care providers. We would like to thank Victoria Frittenburg, her personal assistant for the past few years, the many devoted caregivers, and her very dedicated General practitioner Dr. Shalini Veerassamy.
Cathy is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Michael, children Justin (Miriam Zitner), Jessica, Alexandra (Thomas Burchell) all of Halifax; and Nicholas (Kim Abellar) of Calgary, AB; two grandchildren Zoë and Max; sisters Janis Raymond Shannon and Melissa Raymond Nicholson, Halifax, along with her many special nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross or Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
Visitation to be held Thursday, August 27 from 6:00pm – 9:00pm at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St, Halifax. Private family service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to: www.cruikshankhalifaxfuneralhome.com
