Dianne Elizabeth Ferguson (Elliott)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dianne Elizabeth Ferguson on Monday, March 10, at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax.
Dianne was born in Montreal, QC on February 19, 1941, to Philip J. Elliott III and Ina Celeste Elizabeth Elliott (Colpitts). In her teens, Dianne left Montreal to attend Acadia University, where she made lifelong friends and left an indelible mark on the student community, becoming the first woman president of the Acadia Students’ Union. Dianne graduated from Acadia in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science and Education.
Dianne then embarked on a fulfilling teaching career, beginning with two years in Yellowknife, NWT, and then in Montreal. In the late 1960’s, Dianne settled in Nova Scotia where she worked in high schools in Halifax and Dartmouth for decades. On May 20, 1974, Dianne married James (Jim) Forbes McNee Ferguson, her devoted partner in life and adventure. As both a teacher and guidance counselor, Dianne had a profound and lasting impact on the lives and careers of thousands of young people.
In retirement, Dianne embraced a life of travel, music, art and cherished time spent with friends. A 1999 road trip to Austin, TX to attend the South by Southwest music festival was especially memorable. Together with Jim, she was an avid supporter of arts and culture, and was generous with her time and resources, supporting numerous causes close to her heart. Dianne made friends wherever she went — there was rarely a place you could go with her without encountering someone she knew. In 2020, she and Jim moved to The Berkeley on Pepperell, where they quickly became part of a warm and welcoming community.
Dianne was predeceased by her parents. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband, Jim; her brother, Philip J. Elliott IV (Bev) and niece, Robyn Elliott of Dartmouth; and her nephews, Philip J. Elliott V (Cheryl) of Ottawa, and Jeffrey Elliott (Susan Sim) and family of Toronto.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff at The Berkeley and the QEII Health Sciences Centre for their care and support of Dianne.
Arrangements are in the care of Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dianne’s life will be held on Saturday April 12, 2025 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at St. Mary’s Boat Club, 1641 Fairfield Road, Halifax. A private interment will follow.
In honor of Dianne’s generous spirit, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
