

Steele, Douglas John, of Halifax, loving brother and uncle, passed away quietly surrounded by his loving family on September 7, 2011 at the QE II Health Sciences Centre, VG Site. Doug was born on Long Island, Cape Breton and was the son of Phillip D. and Mary Louise Steele (MacDonald). He is survived by sisters, Sally Perun, Theresa Rycroft, Lillian Higgins (Howard) and Marjorie Chow (Mario) and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. After leaving the RCAF, Doug completed 35 years of distinguished service with the Department of National Defense at Shearwater. Doug enjoyed travel, cherished his Celtic heritage and loved spending time with his family. He was a life long member of St. John the Baptist Church and dedicated many years of service to his church community. He loved conversing and his family will miss his wit and wonderful sense of humour. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, where the family will receive visitors from 2-4pm on Sunday September 11. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10am Monday September 12 from St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Purcell’s Cove Road. Father Joseph Thomas officiating. Interment to take place in the columbarium at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. A heartfelt thank you to the VON, the Palliative Care Team and the nurses and doctors of 6B at the QE II VG Site.
