Dwayne was one of my very first childhood friends. We were about 3 at the time and lived in the apartments on Avalon.  He split my head open once lol I wouldn’t give him my mud pie and he threw a piece of tile off the building at me! But kids will be kids and I never loved him any less and honestly, I’d let him do it again! lol I  love and remember his  smile, laughter and  positivity, his joyful soul and charismatic personality. I am so saddened to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to all of his family and loved ones. May his bright light continue to shine and bring love to your hearts….rest easy my friend. ❤️

I am grateful that Dwayne, Shelley and I were able to catch up in Halifax in 2011.
Dwayne was a wonderful, caring person and he will be missed.

Dwayne was the lead architect on the first project I was ever put on when I joined Nycum as a drafter, which is why I was assigned the seat next to him in our small office. We only worked on one other project together the four years I knew him, but we talked every single day we were both at our desks, sometimes all day, probably much to the distraction and annoyance of our fellow co-workers. 

Dwayne was an absolute character. He loved to spin yarns, and delighted telling all the fresh-faced interns that came through our office horror stories from his career. I never got sick of hearing these stories.

Dwayne could come off as cranky to people that didn't know him, but you could really see what a softie he was when it came to how he interacted with the dogs in our office. He absolutely delighted in spoiling every dog with treats, and we would take turns buying a bag to keep on the space between our desks.

I miss my friend. Sitting next to his empty desk this past month has been a heavy reminder of how much has been lost with Dwayne's passing. He was big part of why I loved coming to work every day, and I will cherish those memories.

To Ayola and the Flynn family: Please accept my deepest condolences. May you be comforted by knowing that Dwayne meant a lot to the people that knew him.

This picture is a group shot of the Guenther Petrarca (Architecture+furniture) staff in New York ca. 1999. This is the architecture firm where Dwayne and Ayola met and where this group of creative people did some great work together and became close friends. We were all shocked to hear of Dwayne's departure at too young an age. We all have very fond memories of what a great guy Dwayne was and will miss him and our time together very much. We will gather soon in NY at our main haunt near the old office, Puffy's tavern, and raise our glasses to Dwayne. Jason Harper

I met Dwayne in 97 at my first architectural job in Tribeca NYC, he came right up to introduce himself and include me in all the after work plans for which I was so grateful. I was the receptionist there and met the many Newfoundlanders who were coming to stay with him while starting out, which is how I met my former roommate and future husband Pete Blackie. We lived right down the street on Prospect Place, Brooklyn and spent so much time together having fun in that beautiful place. I was lucky to be there when Dwayne and Ayola met and fell in love and were later married in Halifax as we had done a few years earlier. It’s impossible to overstate the effect he has had on my life. He was the most generous in spirit, a truly loyal friend and an incredibly kind and warm person. Also one of the funniest people you could ever talk to and just so much fun to be around. His stories were legendary, hilarious and unforgettable. Ayola and the Flynns, we are so sorry for your loss. We are absolutely heartbroken but we’ll cherish our memories of him always.

Dear Ayola and Flynn family,

Hearing the news of Dwayne’s sudden passing was heartbreaking. I’m so deeply saddened for all of you and all that loved Dwayne. 

He was such a beautiful man, total salt of the earth soul, and I’m so happy to have spent many years with him in architecture school.  I remember fondly our years of friendship sharing studio space and joking around and listening to his beautiful laugh and seeing his amazing smile light up the room. He played Fleetwood Mac constantly in our little studio space. Some great memories made. I’m honoured to have known him through those years and call him a great friend. 

He is dearly missed, sending heartfelt love to all.

I am so so so sorry to hear about Dwayne. We went through school together, he was my date for grade 9 prom. Dwayne was always kind, empathetic and smart!!! We walked to church/mass together from our high school and He always saved me a seat in class. We travelled on a school trip to Saskatoon  in 1989, he was loved by all the girls!!! Please accept my sincere condolences and sympathies. God Bless Dwayne.

Sending condolences at this sad time to all those who loved Dwayne.  I taught Dwayne at Labrador City Collegiate and always remember him for his good looks and wonderful personality! I still have the pencil drawings he did of my daughters, Sylvia and Elena.   The drawings  hung on our bedroom wall until our move to Halifax and I often thought of Dwayne and wondered how he was doing. Little did I know we lived in the same city for almost 15 years but I would only recognize that cute teenager from my typing class. It is very difficult  to deal with the sudden loss of a husband, son, brother, nephew and good friend. May all your special  memories of Dwayne give you comfort.

Dwayne was a trusted friend that I remember fondly.
He was so personable and down to earth.
Dwayne and I met at architecture school at TUNS (Dalhousie).  I remember he would typically wear a plaid shirt over a t-shirt, torn jeans, Doc Martens and a ball cap turned backwards.  And in winter he’d wear a red and black plaid coat. Being from the Caribbean, I wasn’t used to seeing so much plaid.  His rugged appearance belied the expressive and sensitive artist beneath.
The world was a better place with his presence and his talent, and his legacy will live on in those who knew and loved him.
