

Ellen Lownds-Sharp, 1931 – 2013, passed away January 29th after a challenging battle with cancer. Ellen was born in Halifax to the late Regimental Sergeant Major, Thomas O’Connor (British Army) and Ellen Delaney. Ellen was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was pre-deceased by her sisters Edith and Winifred and by her brothers Frederick, Thomas, John and Cyril. Ellen was pre-deceased by her first husband, W.G. Staufferman; by her second husband; M.R. “Russ” Lownds; and by her third husband, Alan B. Sharp. Ellen is survived by her daughters, Christine ‘Staufferman’ Horne ( Dr.Edward Horne)Ketch Harbour; Mary Lownds Taylor, (Steven Taylor) Fall River; sons, Shaun Lownds, Vancouver; Hugh Lownds (Kerry MacLean) Halifax; Robbie Lownds (Dr.Christina Bottaro) St. John’s NL. Ellen is also survived by step-daughter Elaine Sharp, (Nancy Swaffer)Halifax; and step-son, Paul Sharp, Middle Cornwall; by her grandchildren to whom she was known as Nana Beep-Beep; Bill Killorn, Toronto; Tess and Peter Killorn, Halifax; Stephanie Ash, Fort McMurray, AB; Jamie Taylor Vallis, Calgary; Jeff and Alex Taylor, Fall River; Lucas and Liam Lownds, St. John’s, NL; and by step-grandchildren, Ted Horne, Burlington; Ben Horne, Calgary; Jake Sharp, Chester Basin; Ben Sharp, Lunenburg; and Katie Sharp-Iyoupe, Mahone Bay; great- grandchild Madelyn Vallis, Calgary; and step- great- grandchild, Annalies Sharp. Ellen was a graduate of Saint Patrick`s High School and Miss Murphy`s Business College. Ellen was a woman of faith; she had a deep love for Jesus and she had a special devotion to St. Joseph. Ellen was a parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas Church for almost sixty years. She was a member of the C.W.L. Ellen was ``Brown Owl` for the 31st Brownie pack of Halifax for twelve years; she introduced many a young girl to the joys of hiking and outdoor camp fires. Ellen taught at The Children`s School and she will be fondly remembered by its alum for her `Betsy` stories. After Ellen`s children went off to university she began a second career at the Halifax Infirmary Emergency Centre where she served as an integral part of a special team of workers for twenty years. Ellen loved her summers at the `Waeg`; she was an avid gardener; she was known for her excellent cooking and baking. Ellen volunteered for numerous charities throughout her life. A Mass for Christian Burial will be held 11 am Saturday, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Rev. Owen Connolly officiating with reception to follow in the Church Hall. A private interment will follow for immediate family at Holy Cross Cemetery. No visitation at Ellen`s request. Family flowers only, donations may be made in Ellen`s name to Sacred Heart School of Halifax Financial Aid Fund or to Bryony House.
