With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Emmanuel Vamvounis, who passed away on July 30th at the age of 90.
Emmanuel was born in 1935 in Pera Triovasalo, Milos, Greece. He grew up in a close-knit family with eight siblings and often spoke with pride of walking hand-in-hand with them to church every Sunday—a cherished memory that reflected their strong bond.
In 1960, Emmanuel moved to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, in search of a better life, working alongside several of his brothers. He held a deep affection for Glace Bay, often speaking warmly of the kindness and friendliness of its people.
In 1967, he returned to Milos to marry his wife of 57 years, Sophia. Together, they returned to Glace Bay and raised three children—Steven (Chrissa), Irene (John), and George (Elizabeth)—whom he lovingly referred to as his best friends. They will miss him dearly.
He adored his four grandchildren—Christopher, Sophie, Emanuel, and Olivia—and spent countless joyful hours with them at the library, playground, and beach in Pollonia, creating memories they will treasure forever.
Emmanuel is also survived by four of his siblings: Antigone, Mike (Matina), Kuriako (Kiki), and Teddy (Eva), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Efstratios and Eirene, and siblings Niko (Katina), Katina (Nikeforos), Maria (Adonis), Zabeta, and brother-in-law Stelios.
A respected businessman in Glace Bay, Emmanuel was the proud owner of Napoli Pizza. He approached his work with tireless dedication, often working long hours to support his family, and became a beloved member of the community.
He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family, his love for walks at Renwick Brook, his sense of humor, and his warm, caring nature.
