It is with sadness that the family of Eugene “Gene” Harvey announce his passing on 17 June 2021 at the age of 99 in Halifax. Gene was the son of Lorimer and Louva Harvey, born on 20 July 1921 in Berwick NS. He was married to his beloved Marjorie (Marnie) Harvey for 57 years before her passing. Gene is survived by: his son Darrell (Vicki), grandchildren Brenden (Tierney) and Conlin, his brother Willis, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister-in-law Nita.
Gene served in the Canadian Army for 27 years, during WW2 and afterwards. After retiring from the army in 1970 he worked for the next 14 years for the NWT government and the Ottawa Housing Authority in senior administrative roles before finally retiring. Gene was a long time member and supporter of Royal Artillery Park Officer’s Mess where he enjoyed regular lunches with many long time friends including Charlie Fowler and Buck Giffin.
During retirement, Gene and Marnie travelled as much as possible. They enjoyed their extended stays in Portugal and Florida, and the many other places where their “fancy” took them.
Gene was a true gentlemen and considerate of others, always holding doors for others or offering to assist those who needed it – even in his very final days. He lived a long and very interesting life, he always had a great story to tell about that life and the people he met along the way.
After Marnie passed away in 2002 Gene moved back to Nova Scotia to reside with his son and daughter-in-law in Eastern Passage. Gene loved his entire extended family, his home province of Nova Scotia and the view of the Halifax Harbour approaches that he enjoyed from his armchair.
The family would like to thank the many people and professionals who supported Gene in his later years, including the staff at Camp Hill Veteran’s Hospital (V4E) who cared for him in his final days. A special thank you to Dale and Julie Wilson (and family) for their friendship.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date when friends and family can gather without restriction. Burial will be at Heatherdale Memorial Gardens, Alma NS. Arrangements are being handled by Cruikshanks Funeral Home.
Donations in his memory can be made to Autism Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.
