Hazel Gwendolyn Andrews (Blakeney)
It is with deep love and heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Hazel Gwendolyn Andrews, who departed this life peacefully at Maplestone Nursing Home on May 24, 2025 at the age of 97.
Born on January 26, 1928, Hazel, lived a life defined by unwavering strength, deep faith, and unconditional love. A devoted mother of eight children, a proud grandmother to seventeen grandchildren, and a joyful great-grandmother to seventeen great-grandchildren, she leaves behind a legacy that spans generations and hearts across the community.
Throughout her nearly century-long journey, Hazel was a pillar of wisdom and grace. She taught by example—through resilience in hard times, laughter in the face of adversity, and endless generosity toward those around her. Her home was a sanctuary, always open and warm, filled with the aroma of good food and the comfort of a listening ear.
She loved fiercely, worked tirelessly, and gave selflessly. Whether tending to her garden, cooking family meals or simply sitting at the family cottage in East Pennant surrounded by those she loved, Hazel found joy in life’s simplest moments. Her faith and commitment to Brunswick Street United Church was her foundation, and her prayers were a quiet force in the lives of all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her siblings James, Ralph, Myrtle and John, husband, Doug, daughter Linda and grandchildren Eric and James, and is survived by her seven children, fifteen grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren, all of whom carry her legacy of love, strength, and compassion.
Spending her final years at Maplestone Nursing Home, the family will forever be grateful to the staff for the compassionate care and love provided to her in her final days.
A service of remembrance will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, at 2666 Windsor Street in Halifax. A reception with family and friends will follow the service occur immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Brunswick Street United Church Mission, in honour of her generous spirit.
