It is with profound sadness that the DeBay family announces the passing of James F. DeBay of Halifax on June 14, 2014 at the QEII Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born to the late Roderick and Lillian (Hobin) DeBay, Jim is survived by his faithful brother Rod and his “favourite” sister Diane DeBay. Jim leaves behind his loving wife Marlene (Merrigan) and three sons, Dennis, Drew and Devin. First and foremost, Jim was the ultimate father and family man. He was the perfect boys’ dad, as he himself remained young at heart until the very end. He ensured the boys experienced all the usual and extraordinary activities he could squeeze into each day with them. Together, they shared a love of drumming, nature, all sports and every fun-filled activity imaginable. A proud and loyal father, strong in his faith, his life exemplified one of basic human kindness. Jim was a man for all seasons and he chose to celebrate each occasion in typical Jim fashion. He truly lit up our life. For those who had the privilege to know him, they knew a genuine, honest and giving soul who put the needs of others above himself. Jim spent his teaching career educating Junior High students at Tantallon and Bedford Junior High and Madeline Symonds Middle School. He loved every aspect of teaching, coaching and mentoring his students and cultivated many lasting friendships with his colleagues. He enjoyed meeting former students and was proud of their various accomplishments. Jim also enjoyed seventeen years of scouting with the 3rd Rockingham Scout Troop, sharing his love for the great outdoors with the boys and their fathers. Jim loved the onset of fall, bringing about the excitement of hunting with his buddies Tim, Don and Greg. However, our fondest family memories remain on the shores of the Northumberland Strait at Heather Beach, where Jim taught the boys to swim, snorkel, and comb the beaches - spending summer family time at his favourite place, where the traditions will surely continue. So long to a great guy who, in his own words, will be “jammin’ with the rock & roll band in heaven”.
