A life well lived….
Jan spent her early years growing up in Liverpool, Nova Scotia and moved to Halifax at age 7. After graduating from the Queen Elizabeth High School, she attended Syracuse University in New York State, majoring in audiology while obtaining a cum laude science degree. She also spent a year as a trainee at the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton, Massachusetts, following which she achieved her dream of becoming a teacher of the hard of hearing.
With the assistance of private sponsors who had helped fund her education, Jan then established a school for pre-school hearing impaired children in the basement of the First Baptist Church in Halifax, an endeavor which attracted students ranging in age from 2 to 6 from across Nova Scotia. As a pioneer in the use of the oral method of teaching, her students were taught to speak as well as use sign language in preparation for their introduction to hearing schools, a subsequent government program she was chosen to supervise in Halifax and Dartmouth.
In addition to having toured every major Canadian city on numerous occasions, Jan lived in Halifax, Grafton, Montreal, Toronto and Voglers Cove. An accomplished rug hooker, a skating judge, a 4H mom, a camp counselor, a former president of the Berwick minor hockey association, and the loving mother of two beautiful children, she relatedly experienced the ultimate joy of visiting Disney World with her grandchildren.
As a passionate traveler, Jan’s adventures spanned five continents. She walked a marathon in Lisbon, Portugal, was an avid white-water canoeist from the Canadian Arctic to the Rio Grande, scaled Mt. Kilimanjaro, rode a hovercraft across the South China Sea, hot air ballooned over the Masai Mara in Kenya, and rode camels in the Australian Outback – to name but a few of her lesser known but wonderful adventures as she experienced life to the fullest.
She was a selfless soul with a heart of gold.
There was wonder, there was love, and there was laughter. We treasure these happy memories. They are glorious footprints in the sands of life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Maggie’s Playground, a community playground dedicated to the memory of Jan’s late daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Timmins (e-transfers can be made to [email protected], and cheques can be made out to “Voglers Cove Hall” and mailed to Rosemary Reinhardt, 738 Hwy 331, Voglers Cove, NS B0J 2H0).
Cremation has taken place under the care of Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
