

Jean trained as a nurse at the Glace Bay General Hospital, and completed post-graduate studies at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, in operating room nursing. She worked in hospitals in Inverness, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Zweibrucken, Germany. Jean returned to Nova Scotia and settled in Halifax where she worked at the Victoria General Hospital. She met and married Ralph Cooley, raised two children, and was active with her family, community and church.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph, sister, Emily Sweet, and brother, Alex Smith.
She is survived by her children, Carole Cooley (John Sewuster) and Stephen (Deborah) Cooley, sisters-in-law, Doris Roe and Ann Smith, and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
Special thanks to the staff at Sullivan’s Lane, Parkstone Enhanced Care, where she resided for the past 10 months, and to Kim Sullivan, Beatrice Frances, Laura MacDonald and Doris Harnett whose care enabled her to remain at home prior to that. Jean will be remembered for her strong dedication and devotion to family, friends, and faith.
Visitation will take place at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home on Monday, February 1, 2016 from 7-9pm. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 6036 Coburg Rd, Halifax, on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Russ Daye presiding. A reception will follow. Cremation has taken place, and internment will occur in Port Hood at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew’s United Church or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
