It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Judith (Judy) McKay, aged 80, of Halifax. She peacefully departed at the QE11 VG, Site Palliative Care Unit on January 20th, 2025. Judy, the daughter of the late Percy and Madge (Dunbar), was the cherished eldest sibling of five.
Growing up in Greenfield and Mount Uniacke, Hants County, Judy experienced a childhood filled with love, laughter, and joyful family gatherings. She graduated from Hants West Rural High School and embarked on a diverse career journey. Judy took great pride in pursuing various courses towards a degree while working at Mount Saint Vincent in her 40s. Later, she enrolled at Kingstech Community College in Kentville and successfully completed the Funeral Service Program. For several years, she dedicated her skills to Atlantic Funeral Home in Lower Sackville before serving as the Office Administrator at Bedford United Church until her retirement in 2001.
Throughout her life, Judy generously volunteered at Spencer House for Seniors and The Sunshine Room Bereavement Program at the VG Hospital. An avid reader, Judy's book collection ranged from Keith Richards' biography to classics like Wuthering Heights. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and often shared this hobby with her sister, Ginny. Her appreciation for the arts extended to the symphony, opera performances, and various forms of literature.
Judy deeply loved her sons, Michael and Mark, and cherished every moment spent with them. She was preceded in death by her parents, Percy and Madge (Dunbar) Johnston, brother David, second mother Aunt Mildred, and her beloved, Jack. Judy will be lovingly remembered by her sons, Michael (Lana) and Mark (Heidi), sisters Ginny (Wayne) Terfry, Cindy (Russell) Taylor, brother Darrell (Nancy) Johnston, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and skilled staff at the Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care and support during Judy's final days.
