

Barbara attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, Dalhousie University, (B.A., B.Ed.); McGill, (M.Ed.). She spent a year at the University of Nice on a teaching fellowship. Barbara taught for the Halifax District School Board for 35 years. She taught at St. Mary’s Boy’s School for a number of years and then moved to administration. When she retired in 1992, she was the supervisor of Guidance and Special Services.
Barbara was a member of the Board of Dalhousie University, Mount St. Vincent University, the Nova Scotia Power Corporation, the Immigration Advisory Council, the Advisory Committee on Judiciary appointments, the Mayor’s Task Force on off-shore activities, and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.
Barbara supported the community serving on the Board of the Atlantic Guidance Centre, Halifax Citadel Foundation, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and the Atlantic Symphony.
Barbara was a member of the Junior League of Halifax, the Halifax Infirmary Auxiliary, and the Art Study Group at the Art Gallery. She was a founding member of the Halifax Chapter of the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin.
Barbara was proud to receive the Queen’s Jubilee medals marking the Golden and Diamond Anniversary of the succession to the Throne.
Barbara was fascinated by politics. She worked tirelessly for the Progressive Conservative Party by doing any job that she was asked to undertake. She loved every minute of it.
Barbara enjoyed the summer months spent at “the farm” at Lake Ainslie. She loved everything about Lake Ainslie especially her wonderful neighbors, and the great spirit of community. Entertaining family and friends gave her the opportunity to show off the farm. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than relaxing on the deck watching the eagles soar.
Barbara enjoyed sports, diving, swimming, golfing, and walking in Point Pleasant Park and along the beaches of Inverness County. She also played a lot of bridge and took great pleasure in music and theater.
She is survived by her sister Joan of Halifax; niece, Elizabeth Markewicz, Boxborough, Mass.; nephews, John Murphy, Williston, Vt.; Paul Murphy, Acton, Ma.; Gregory Murphy, Oakland, Ca.; grand-nieces, Kimberley and Allison Markewicz; Rhiannon and Alexandra Murphy; Alex and Peter Murphy; Peter and Genna Murphy.
She was predeceased by her parents and sister, Anne Murphy.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Nova Scotia Division.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, August 25 from 6 – 8 p.m. in Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 26, at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Halifax. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
