We lived next door to The Swims in Halifax, in the late 1960's - early 1970's. They were more than neighbours - they were close friends. So many of us children in the neighbourhood played together, and were often at their house, or in their yard. Our Parents were all good friends, and socialized together often - cocktail parties, or just a good chat and a cup of coffee.
     I always looked up to Ruth - she was so beautiful, glamorous, lovely, and kind to me, as a little girl that would often tag along with my Mother, for a visit. We always felt welcome in their home, and they were always welcome in ours. I have so many happy childhood memories of Ruth, Mac, and the boys.
     Tony, David, P.J., and the rest of the Family - please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your lovely Mother. We loved her dearly, and will never forget her. Sending hugs to you all.

I'd like to extend my deepest condolences to you all on the passing of your Mother, Ruth.  I always remember her smiling as my friends and I cut through your backyard regularly when we were kids.  I hope you're comforted by many happy memories and please know my family and I are thinking of you.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of Ruth. She was a lovely person and always seemed to have a sparkle in her eye. She was a great friend to my mother and a wonderful neighbour to our family.  I hope your happy memories will provide your family with some consolation.

My heartfelt condolences to PJ, David, Tony, and to Ruth's many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Ruthie was like my second mother next door for 25 years.  She was so kind to me as a child.  After our families went our separate ways I missed her and thought of her often and wondered where she was and how she was doing.  I was touched to have the opportunity to reconnect with her a little bit very recently.  She was beautiful inside and out and I'm sure she will be missed by many.

To All Ruthie’s Family:  Deepest Sympathy to everyone during this sad and most difficult time!  Met Ruthie and Mac many years ago in the presence of our dear sister, Anna Butland.   Indeed, their kindness and great friendship left an indelible mark, and as well, with all of Anna’s siblings.  Ruthie and Anna attended my 60th Birthday celebration in St. John’s as a surprise - what a delightful gift and wonderful memory!  All the Butland family loved Ruthie and will always have fond memories of all our great get togethers.

I knew Ruth, your mom,  my neighbour for about 15 years in Summer Cove. I loved her as a friend and neighbour. We shared so many happy times more than sad times. We shared news of our family members and would see them on special occasions like birthdays or our family visits or just sitting around enjoying our time together. We shared times with our Summer Cove girls and would do lunch on our birthdays or whatever and our Christmas dinner get  togethers with neighbours in Summer Cove.  
She was someone who you wanted to be your friend or neighbour and I had that time with that very special person, your mom, grandmother, niece, nephew and more and I feel blessed in knowing her and our time together! ❤️🙏🏻☮️

As a close friend of the Swim family, I wanted to share with you a few of my thoughts about Ruth.

My relationship with Ruth and the Swim family goes back to the mid 1970s.  My family lived in the same neighborhood as the Swims and I attended Halifax West High School where I met their eldest son, Tony.  We soon became close friends and as a result of our relationship I was subsequently introduced to Malcolm and Ruth as well as the other members of the Swim family, brothers David and Patrick.  As time went on, my relationship with the family developed into something much more.  As a result, I became very close to Mac, Ruth and the family.

First and foremost, I think of Ruth as a beautiful woman in mind, body and spirit.  Although raised in a small rural community, she had a certain elegance and sophistication about her that left an indelible mark on you.  She was adventurous, bright, opinionated and very much an independent thinker who was always willing to share her views and engage in discussion.

She was also a wonderful wife to her husband Malcolm.  She was supportive in his endeavours and was only too willing to share in his adventures.  Together, they were “partners” in every aspect of the word and shared some 47 years together.  Perhaps more importantly,  they raised three children together, Tony, David and Patrick.   Ruth was a warm and loving mother, supportive in every way of each and every child.  Her maternal and loving nature was extended not only to her own children, but to a legion of their friends who were always welcome at the Swim home.  

Ruth will be missed by many, including her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the many friends that she touched throughout her lifetime.  She was a wonderful lady.

We had the good fortune many years ago of meeting dearest Ruthie & Mac in Englewood, Florida  for the first time.  Later it was our pleasure to be graced by Ruthie’s presence on many occasions in Halifax, Florida and Newfoundland.  All encounters were a result of my sister Anna’s close friendship to the Swims. A lovely and gentle lady whose infectious smile and cheerful demeanour will always hold a warm place in our hearts.
