

Ruth Lillabelle Swim (Ryer) Of Bedford, N.S. passed away peacefully on December 22, 2023 at the age of 85. Ruth was born and raised in Barrington, N.S. and met the love of her life at a young age. She was lucky to share 47 years with her beloved husband Malcolm, ‘Mac’ Swim. Together they built a family and raised three sons: Tony, David and Patrick (PJ).
Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Mac, and infant son, Martin as well as her parents, Nora (Shand) and Burnley Ryer, and her brother John. She was also predeceased by her sister-in-law Marlene Ryer, mother-in-law Annie (Crowell) Swim, father-in-law Evan Swim, and brothers and sisters-in-law Glendean, Royden, Paul, Melba, Claire and Cyril. Ruth is survived by her sons; Tony (Susan), David, and PJ, and her brothers; Roger and Clinton (Jean) as well as nieces and nephews; Tim, Jackie, Peter, Kim, Cherie, Susan, Sherry, Laurie, Paul, Kim, Kevin, Holly, Joseph and Darren. Ruth was proud to be ‘Gammie’ to Elysée (Brad), Laura, Meghan, Emma (Kurtis), Jayda (Keanu), Malcolm and Nina as well as 7 (soon to be 8) great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by many close cousins and friends; Marg, Carol, Anna, Marjorie, and Maggie to mention a few. Her legacy lives on through these people and the countless lives she influenced.
Ruth had many passion projects including needlepoint, knitting, crossword puzzles, bird watching, volunteering on different committees at Bethany United Church, and her raspberry patch. Over the years, Ruth loved fine dining and traveling with Mac and loved her many excursions with her lifelong besties getting together for coffee, cocktails, glamping and traveling. Ruth will be remembered for the love she shared with her friends and family as well as her generosity and kindness.
The family would like to thank her caregiver, Susan, for the love and kindness that was shown to Ruth for the past one and a half years up to the very end. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Bethany United Church, Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice. A celebration of Ruths life will take place at Bethany United Church on Saturday, December 30th at 9 am and a burial service will follow in Barrington at 3pm at the Old Riverdale Cemetery with coffee to follow at The Wesley Heritage Centre, Civic 2288, Trunk 3, Barrington. Gammie will be missed and forever remembered.
