Anastasios (Taso) Sarlanis
Born January 14th 1934
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anastasios Sarlanis at the age of 91, a devoted husband, proud father, loving grandfather and beloved member of St George's Greek Orthodox Church and Community. Anastasios passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, leaving behind a legacy built on hard work, tradition, and unwavering love for his heritage.
Born in Karystos, Greece, Anastasios grew up rooted in the values of family, faith, and resilience. In 1964, seeking opportunity and a better future, he made the courageous decision to emigrate to Canada. With little more than determination and the dream of a better life, he set out to build a new beginning for himself and start his family. He first purchased The Broadway Restaurant that later became Mama Mia Pizza which he owned and operated for 38 years. On his days off you could find him at Cousins Restaurant for his weekly coffee date with friends. He enjoyed nothing more than being surrounded by family and friends, especially for holiday gatherings. Anastasios was also very fond of his long Sunday drives.
While he embraced his new country with open arms, his heart remained tied to Greece. He was deeply committed to raising his children in the Greek culture — teaching them the language, sharing stories of his homeland, celebrating Greek traditions, and instilling a strong sense of identity and pride. His home was always filled with the warmth of hospitality, the sounds of traditional music, and the aroma of lovingly prepared meals that brought everyone to the table.
His legacy will live on in the stories shared, the traditions continued, and the values passed down through generations.
Anastasios leaves behind a family who will cherish his memory deeply. He was the son of the late Dimitrios and Ageliki Sarlanis. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Marina (Scopelites), children Ageliki Sarlanis, Christina (David) Dodge, Demetri (Lisa) Sarlanis, Rothanthe (Jimmy) Zelios and his loving grandchildren Taso (Thea), Costadina, Niko and Thanasi. Sibling Mixali (Mema) Sarlanis, Karystos, Greece. As well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was predeceased by his other brother Mixali in childhood.
