

He was the son of the late Elmer and Dorothy (nee Isenor) of Truro, Nova Scotia. He is survived by his two sisters, Mary Howlett (Gavin) of Auckland, New Zealand and Valerie Clancy (Patrick) of Peterborough, Ontario. He is also survived by his long time close friend and companion, Brenda Pate of Bedford, Nova Scotia.
Vernon was a 45 year employee of Edmonds Landscape and Construction Services Limited and was awarded Landscape Nova Scotia Industry Champion Award in 2020. He graduated with a Diploma of Ornamental Horticulture in 1976 from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) in Truro, Nova Scotia.
Vernon was a firm believer in innovation, technology and continuous learning. He was one of the first in Nova Scotia to achieve the Landscape Maintenance Technician Certification designation in 1996 and the Landscape Installation Technician Certification in 1999. He was an active participant in assessing/qualifying fellow green industry peers for Landscape Certification at the NSAC in Truro each spring from 1997-2012. In 2010 Vernon qualified for the Apprentice/Journeymen program through Landscape Nova Scotia and earned his Red Seal Landscape Horticulture Certification in 2013. His commitment to the landscape industry was undeniable.
During winter months, Vernon used his various trucks to salt and plow and became one of the first in Eastern Canada to earn the Certified Snow Professional (CSP) designation in 2013.

Visitation will be at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia at on Friday, October 29 from 4-7 pm with a private burial at the Watson Cemetery, East Prince Street, Truro, Nova Scotia at a later date. Covid protocols apply (proof of double vaccination required).
