William Patrick Dacey, age 85, died at the Victoria General Hospital Halifax after a brief illness.
Born in Halifax December 8, 1937, he and younger sister, Lorraine were placed in care at St. Joseph’s Orphanage when he was barely school age. He was grateful to the Sisters of Charity for their care and for his education and to Father Cudahy for his kindness. He remained in care until he aged-out of the orphanage at 14 years.
He survived the foster system defending children from harm when he was still a child himself.
Living unsheltered for a time he was found by his Uncle Robert Dacey who, with his wife Peggy, welcomed him into their home providing unconditional love and respect. He lived with them in Halifax until his early 20’s when he moved to Toronto.
He worked for Colgate Palmolive for more than 35 years. He later retired to country life outside Oshawa but returned to Halifax for his later years.
Genuinely interested in others, he made acquaintances, friends, as he listened more than he spoke. He took people as he found them never passing judgement.
He loved animals and they loved him.
He had his struggles but also the strength of character to overcome them.
An athlete in his youth, he returned to running, completing his last marathon at age 52.
An avid sports fan he was fiercely loyal choosing to cheer for the underdog. Go Leafs!
Bill was so very grateful to his cousin Holly and niece, Kim Hooper, and her family: husband, Shawn, daughter Michaela, and son Thomas who was like a grandson to him. Their care and love were a great comfort to Bill especially when he returned to Halifax.
He is predeceased by his sister Lorraine.
Bill is survived by wife Ruth (Doncaster), daughter Dorothy Doncaster and son
William Dacey jr.
His funeral will be held at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, Halifax on December 30,2022 at 11 am. Deacon Art Mitchell presiding.
