“The man. The myth. The legend.” Johnnie Eversole passed away in his daughter, Lisa McGoldrick’s, house surrounded by his family on March 19, 2021. Born September 23, 1937, in Laurel, Indiana, he was the son of the late Myrtle and Preston Eversole. Johnnie loved deep fried Southern catfish, thin pancakes from Cracker Barrel, Coca-Cola, vacationing in Florida, American muscle cars, Chevy trucks, Lays Potato chips, flipping houses, buying houses, cars, and properties, negotiating, trading stocks, talking politics, Conway Twitty, Old Spice, homeopathic medicine, his wife and children, thin, beautiful people, farming, making money, and he took fashion cues from no one wearing his (white tube socks with all white-tennis shoes). Not necessarily in that order. He hated non-American food, hospitals, Democrats, doctors, and lazy people. Also, not necessarily in that order.
Johnnie was a jack of all trades. After dropping out of school in the eighth grade, he became a self-taught entrepreneur very early. Through hard work and multiple jobs at-a-time, he bought his own car, started a mail route, owned a furniture store, owned a siding business, opened and ran a grocery store, bought and managed a bar, built 4 houses, owned multiple rentals, learned how to buy and sell stock, ran a farm with cattle, chickens, goats, bunnies, cats, and dogs, grew corn, tobacco, rhubarb, tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries, and grapes, and retired from Champion Paper Mill in Hamilton, Ohio. He said he grew up poor but was going to leave this world as a legacy, and he did just that.
Johnnie lied about his age to get his driver’s license and started working at an early age. Shortly after that, a beautiful girl moved in next door and was best friends with his sister, Thelma Estridge. After hopping the fence and impressing the beautiful girl with his ruggedly handsome James Dean swagger, began the love story of a lifetime to Juanita Bailey of Harlen, Kentucky.
His spirit is carried by his loving wife of 64 years, Juanita Eversole; along with three children; Lisa and Tom McGoldrick of San Antonio, Texas, John and Katherine Eversole of New York, New York, and Natalie Johnson and Brian Mason of Mason, Ohio; 8 grandchildren, Bailey, Ava, and Sophia McGoldrick, Avery and Peyton Eversole, Justin Eversole, Courtney and Morgan Johnson; 1 great-grandchild, Evie Johnson; five siblings, Preston (Junior) Eversole of Fairfield, Ohio, Thelma Estridge of Brookville, Indiana, Juanita Baker of Metamora, Indiana, Kelly Wetterer, West Chester, Ohio, and Kim Eversole-Bolin of Cincinnati, Ohio; and many other loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends from every walk of life.
Though he was a man of action, and few words, we were blessed to learn many valuable lessons from Johnnie throughout his 84 years, among them: “Brains and Trains… You Took the Train,” “Do I need to peck you in the head?” When asking where he was going… “Are you writing a book? Where is your paper and pencil for taking notes?” “Think before you speak, then you will never have to say you are sorry.” “Dad, where did you get that from?... his response…The Midnight Express.” We learned that vinegar and toe medicine cures everything from a sprained ankle to a cold. Most importantly, having him as a role model, we learned that with hard work and determination, we could do or be anything we chose.
Memorial Services for Johnnie Eversole will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at Rose Hill Funeral Chapel, 2421 Princeton Road Hamilton, Ohio, 45011 with Johnnie’s nephew and Pastor, Tim Oldfield of Columbus, Ohio officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery Gazebo where his ashes will be placed. Due to COVID-19, only immediate family is allowed to attend the service. All friends and family are welcome to attend the Celebration of Life at Juanita Eversole’s house, 6455 Fountains Blvd. West Chester, OH, 45069 any time after 1:30 pm. Please bring pictures and stories to celebrate and remember, “The man. The myth. The legend.”
