My heart goes out to your family, my favorite teacher of all time. Never will forget the cow chewing bubble gum picture on her classroom wall. 

Aunt Pat has always had a kind spirit and a large personality.   Her laugh was frequent and sincere.   She was exceptionally loyal to her family.  Her home was always open to any of us.  As a kid, I always looked forward to her visits with my cousins.  She and her crew made trips to the Fashion Shop almost a ritual.  It was a big deal to me when I was old enough to go with them.  She knew how to throw a wedding.  You can't beat an outdoor, casual, pig roast wedding.    May God watch over your family until everyone are reunited again. 

I will always remember how much Aunt Pat loved her family and how supportive she was was. When I was younger, Mamaw brought us to visit Aunt Pat and Grandma, who Aunt Pat was caring for at the time. She was always so patient and took such great care of Grandma. During many visits when I was growing up, she and Mamaw would sit at the kitchen table the entire time catching up. Aunt Pat started so many sentences with, "Why Granite...." I can still hear it in my head. Many times I sat there with them the entire time too. She would make the couch, chair, and floor into sleeping spots for us, and let Bradley and I look through her VHS tapes for something to watch at night. She kept that tray of makeup in the bathroom that always appealed to me as a little kid and I loved to go through it. She never minded us running around, going through her makeup or her drawers. Looking back I realize how patient she was with us as kids who loved to run around the house and get into things. She also always made sure there was plenty to eat at Easter brunches and would send us home with a sleeve of her yeast rolls. Even though we were a couple hours drive away, she still came to graduation parties, weddings, and even my going-away party when I was moving to California. I know she loved us and we loved her. I will really miss her. 

Pat is my sister.  We came from very humble beginnings, but she aspired to dignity and respect. Her son Jeff Darner graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I'm told ME is a difficult course of study. I list him as an example of her aspirations. She was proud of the achievements of her children and grandchildren.  This is a continuation of the advancement of her own brothers and sisters. All of the siblings attended or graduated from college.  Her siblings have been teachers, engineers, and one Lt Colonel in the US Army ( Gordon recently passed ) .  I found this example of some of her writings   .   This is what I feel using a quote from Plutarch. Marcellinus was making a strong attack speech against Pompey, who interrupted saying, "Marcellinus is the unfairest man I know. He ought to be grateful to me for giving him something to say when he was always so tongue-tied. He used to be starved of words and now he is positively choking over them."   She had an acute sense of humor as the quote shows.

 

I will never forget the love and concern Pat had for her family and friends. How she took time to pray for each and everyone daily. She prayed for health, guidance, wisdom, prosperity, safety, and whatever the need was. Pat was such a kind soul. I will miss the times in the kitchen preparing for holiday events. The rolls, cookies, adding butter to the corn. Then there was the fair, bidding on each grandchild’s project making sure that each one got a proper bid, whether from her, a bank, or another competitive bidder.  She was a woman of great integrity.  Like in Luke 13:34b ...How often I have longed to gather “her” children (nieces, brothers, sisters, friends, daughters, sons, grandchildren, etc.) as a hen gathers her chicks.... Pat loved deeply and she lived as a light and a beacon of love. I will miss you Pat, I look forward to meeting you in heaven.

I remember when I was so little and "under foot" as my grandmother used to put it,  she had always had gum in her purse. One day I asked her for some and she had said she didn't have any, like many kids i didn't believe her since I knew she always had some. I kept asking and was inching towards her purse, rifling through it. I heard her say if you dump my purse out I am going to spank you! I didn't believe her and got a spanking. Even at 43 yrs old she told that story with pride, among other ones, about me and my brother Jason. I loved my grandmother and she always understood me taking off and going into the military and going where the work led me. And was always glad when I came in for a visit specially with my two kids Evan and Sofia. 

Not eight, not seven: Now we are six. 
Surely never again comes such a sister! 

My dear sister, this is the most difficult thing I have ever had to endure in my lifetime. Losing Gordon and now you less than a month apart is heart wrenching. I try to remember the good times, especially when you made me step in chicken piles and of course there were the cow piles. I would scream and yell and go back for more. Hoping those kinds of memories will sustain me in the days and years ahead. I pray that we will meet again and I believe we will. I love you forever, Granite

Pat, I sure am going to miss our chats by the flower bed and the group gathering with Bobbie sitting on your little wall talking about the flowers and the other stuff going on in life.  Last year was a strange year with all that was going on and i missed your Holiday gatherings.   Rest in peace my friend.  You will be missed..
