News Death Notice
FUGATE, Thomas "Gene" On Wednesday, August 7, 2013 Gene lost his battle with leukemia at Jewish Hospital, Kenwood, Ohio. He dealt with his disease through God's guidance and the love and support from family and friends as well as Immanuel Baptist Church, where he was a member. He was born in Hamilton on November 30, 1938, the son of John and Madge (Combs) Fugate. He was a 1956 graduate of Hamilton High School where he played basketball. He attended Bowling Green State University. Gene was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps serving from December 9, 1959 to December 8, 1965. He married Shirley Fannin on April 6, 1963 in Hamilton. He was employed as a firefighter for the City of Hamilton for 26 years, retiring January 24, 1991. Gene enjoyed the last 20 years in Florida during the winter months where he and Shirley played golf and tennis as often as they could. Gene never met a stranger no matter where he went. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends; however, he especially took pleasure in attending his grandchildren's activities as well as giving "tips" whenever he could. He took great pride in all of their accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Jana (Joey) Lewis and Lori (Jeff) Roberts and four grandchildren, Emily and Eric Roberts and Taylor and Jackson Lewis, all of Hamilton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ray Fugate. Memorial contributions may be donated to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Tri-State Southern Ohio Chapter, 4370 Glendale Milford Road, Cincinnati, OH 45242.
