Audrey was born in Nottingham, England in 1932 and moved to Dumfries, Scotland as a young girl. Her parents (Hugh and Edith Fulton) and her two older brothers (Derek and Roy) moved to Scotland to be closer to extended family. Growing up during the depression and WWII was not an easy life but it was a life that shaped her character and spirit. Strong, adventurous, and loving. Scotland was always Audrey’s home country with many fond memories of family and friendships.
As a young woman, in the early 1950s, Audrey left Scotland to immigrate to Canada. She lived close to Scottish family members already in Hamilton. She found employment, met new friends and began a romance with a handsome young man, Ken Bragdon, who won her heart. Audrey and Ken were married in 1955. Audrey’s parents moved to Hamilton from Dumfries a few years later and they all remained close until their passing. Audrey and Ken lived a long, full life filled with family. They raised three daughters and enjoyed many adventures together. Their marriage lasted 58 years, until Ken passed away in 2014.
Audrey had many creative interests and hobbies. She used her green thumb to create beautiful home gardens throughout her life. Audrey was the best baker and cook. Her family enjoyed every delicious meal and dessert she created; pies, shortbread, fresh vegetables from the garden and homemade jams. Audrey was a gifted seamstress and needle crafter. She lovingly made many outfits for her young daughters and later, treasured sweaters and blankets for her grand-babies. Audrey loved animals and her family grew up always having a dog and the occasional cat.
Audrey enjoyed her close friendships with sisters-in-law, neighbors, cousins, and work colleagues that lasted a lifetime. She could often be heard having long, fun phone conversations with her laughter and Scottish accent filling the kitchen. Audrey became an expert at using her computer for movies, games and social media. She enjoyed using Facebook and Messenger to stay in touch with family and friends.
Audrey loved music, movies, crossword puzzles, scrabble, words with friends, and occasional casino trips. The music of Neil Diamond, Perry Como, Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdinck and others was often playing in the background at the Bragdon home. Audrey enjoyed the beauty of nature and travels with her husband and her family. Many family vacations were enjoyed at beachside destinations. Trips to Southampton, Ontario were an annual family favorite since the early 1970s.
Audrey was a loving mother to Linda (Phil), Laurie, and Susan (Walt). She was the much loved and proud Grandma of 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She was a dear sister to her brothers (Derek and Roy) , and her sisters and brothers by marriage (Betty, Jean and Jim, Ruby and George, Bob and Barb). In Canada, California, Scotland and England,
Audrey will be missed dearly by her beloved grandchildren and great grandchild and her many nieces, nephews and friends. Her smile and laughter lit up the room and every conversation. She always told us how much she loved us and how proud she was of all of us. We will carry her in our hearts forever.
Her family will receive friends for a memorial gathering at the Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Avenue, Hamilton on Friday, April 11, 2025 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. A private service will take place at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA would be appreciated.
The family would like to share a special poem:
when I go
don't learn to live without me
just learn to live with my love
in a different way
and if you need to see me
close your eyes
or look in your shadow
when the sun shines...I'm there
sit with me in the quiet
and you'll know that I did not leave
there is no leaving
when one soul is blended with another
when I go
don't learn to live without me
just learn to look for me
in the moments
I'm there
