Peacefully and with family by her side, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Audrey Jean (Carlyle) Montgomery, in her 90th year at Idlewyld Manor on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Audrey was born in Brantford, Ontario in 1925 and graduated from nursing school in 1946. She met Howard and they married in 1948 and moved to Hamilton where they raised their 5 children. Because of family commitments, Audrey never practised nursing, but she was always the neighbourhood nurse and people would frequently seek her knowledge and advice. She was the most caring, selfless person who always put her family and friends first. Her life was devoted to caring for others. She adored her grand-children and they can all recall with great pleasure their trips to Bruce Park, Woolco Plaza and weekend sleepovers. She was also blessed with two beautiful great-grand-children who brought so much joy to her life. Audrey was predeceased by her loving husband Howard in 1994 and leaves behind her children George (Lynne), Brad (Sherry), Mary (Dan), Ken, Rob (Leslie) and grand-children Jason (Melissa), Lisa, Andrew (Natalie), David, Michael, Jennifer, Michelle and Kyle and great-grandchildren Ava and James. Our family would like to acknowledge and thank Idlewyld Manor (The Oakwood) for their exceptional and compassionate care of our mother for the last 4 years, as she struggled with Alzheimer's disease. A very special thank you is also extended to our friend and mom's caregiver Imelda Vergara (Mhel) who allowed mom to stay in her own home an extra year and who truly loved and cared for her as if she was her own mother. Our gratitude is beyond measure. Audrey was blessed to have very special neighbours whose friendship and love was such an important part of her life for over fifty years. A heartfelt thank you to Frances Hynes for being that special friend and neighbour. In Audrey's memory, if so desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society. Cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place. Arrangements entrusted to Cresmount Funeral Home. Audrey will be deeply missed by all her family, friends and neighbours. Even at the height of this devastating disease, she always had a special smile for us all.
