Donald was a devoted and loving husband to the late Barbara for 53 years, loving father to David (Mary) and Heather (Jon), and cherished grandfather of Kathryn, Matthew, and Ryan. Donald was the beloved brother of Joanne Johnston, brother-in-law of Lois Howell, and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Donald was a life-long member of Ryerson United Church in Hamilton. He served his faith community by providing leadership in a variety of roles over the years. Most notably, he served as church treasurer for over 20 years, finally ending his tenure last year. Professionally, he began his career in different roles in the retail sector, including working at his father's bicycle shop on James Street, but quickly learned that teaching was his passion, a career that he held for 32 years. Donald retired as the Head of Business at Westdale Secondary School in 1997, but also taught at Hillpark, Sir Winston Churchill, and Glendale Secondary Schools. He was a favourite teacher to many students over the years, and in 1997 was the recipient of the Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario ‘Accounting Teacher of the Year’ Award, an accomplishment of which he was most proud. The family thanks Drs. Roman Jaeschke & Arjun Sharma as well as the entire staff in the ICU at St. Joseph's Hospital for the exceptional care and support he received throughout his stay.
