I have no idea if you remember me I stayed with Jessie and Duncan when I was 19I was Jessie keillers daughter Susan thomson from Scotland. I have only just found out about your dads passing as uncle Neil and Jean in Edinburgh cannot be bothered since my mums death to keep in touch. I am sorry to hear if this your mum and dad were so kind to me and I have happy memories of my time with them . What a wonderful legacy they left of children and gran and great grandchildren c

Duncan Cairnie was a beloved part of my childhood (as was Jessie).  My brother, Scott Walter and I were discussing how much we loved him.  He was a wonderful person, with a ready smile, and a kind heart.  I have so many treasured memories of them.  Back in the eighties, they were away on a trip, when my father Peter Walter had unexpected surgery.  Upon their return they came over to visit.  Dad was keen to show them his surgical scars, and no amount of politeness on their part could dissuade him.  To my last day I will never forget the looks on their faces as he disrobed, holding a towel in front of himself, so they could admire his scars.  Finally they persuaded Dad to put his clothes back on, and we could all relax.  All of us felt Duncan and Jessie were part of the family, so of course Dad was certain they would want to see what he had been through.  What sweethearts they were.  My deepest sympathy to the whole family in your loss.  I was so sorry not to be at the funeral, but was unfortunately conducting a funeral of a parishioner in Toronto at the same time. Duncan was my first boss for my first job at JB Webb after graduating university in 1974.  I was contemplating working for about a year and then going to teacher's college, but with Duncan's patient guidance and with his fatherly advice (he always called me "son" or "laddy") I decided to keep working at JB Webb and learn as much as I could from him, and Jack Wotherspoon.  I never regretted staying with Webb for 34 years and I owe it to starting my career under Duncan's capable supervision.  

Dear Janet and Family,
Duncan has been a part of our lives for the past 55 years. First with working at J.B. Webb with Frank since 1964 and then when I came along in 1979 at Webb. He introduced me to you, Janet, prior to our wedding - he insisted you do my makeup for me! He helped celebrate our wedding day with us, our house warming party and so many other things in our lives. I will always remember the Webb Dances, the Webb retiree luncheons and the telephone calls from him and to him.  We've lost someone special here but I'm sure Heaven is having one great big party. Love and Hugs to all.

Duncan and I share origins: both born in Scotland, emigrated to Canada as adults, shared a Scottish Presbyterian faith......and an uncommon surname.  We also looked like one another close enough to be brothers.  I heard about Duncan at a General Assembly and had the opportunity to meet him for a meal in Hamilton about 1984.  I noticed he had the same peculiarity in his thumbs as my father and I had.  So obviously we were related......and we both had an interest in genealogy and had family trees but no common ancestor.  So we turned next to having our Y-chromosomes mapped.  We were disappointed to discover that if there was a  common ancestor it was many, many generations back.  So we just remained good friends and continued to enjoy visits when we could manage it.

Farewell, good friend.  We shall meet again , and I dare say it won't matter tuppence that we are not related.

I was sad when I read of the passing of your dad.  I remember him well from my visits to your home.  Your family will always be in my prayers.
