Macfarlane, Elizabeth Louise, nee Goodyear. On May 7, 2014 in her ninetieth year after a brief illness, Betty passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family and friends. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Edmond Blakely “Blake” Macfarlane. Much loved and admired mother of David (Janice Lindsay), Barbara Jean Mann (Keith), James ( Karen King) , and Douglas ( Nancy Harvey). Much loved mother-in-law of Shawna Macfarlane. Adored grandmother of Katie, Jennifer, Caroline, Blake, Robbie, and Tessa. Predeceased by her brother Joe Goodyear and sister Jean Elliott, Betty is survived by her sister Barbara Stein. A proud Newfoundlander, Betty was born in Carmanville, the eldest child of Gladys and Josiah Goodyear, and grew up in Grand Falls. She attended Memorial University before graduating from the University of Toronto in 1945. Her first job was teaching high school history in Stouffville, Ontario. Married life began at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. In 1952, Betty and Blake returned to Hamilton to settle. A tireless volunteer, Betty was a past president of the Junior League of Hamilton/Burlington and the Volunteer Committee of the Art Gallery of Hamilton. She was active with the Women’s Auxiliary of Hamilton General and also sat on the hospital’s board. She was a longtime member of The Big Sisters Association and a former governor of Trinity College School. Betty was a member of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, the Tamahaac Club, and Melrose United Church. She was a faithful supporter of the Locke Street Branch of the Hamilton Public Library, a firm believer in local businesses, and a regular customer of her neighborhood shops and restaurants. She enjoyed bridge, loved dancing, and was an avid reader. She completed the daily crossword until three days before her death and never lost her sense of humour or her Newfoundland friendliness. She treasured a life full of dear friends and family. Nanan especially cherished her beloved grandchildren. She left on a spring day, as if with a smile and a little wave. Exactly as she would have wished. A private cremation has taken place. Friends may call at the MARLATT FUNERAL HOME, 615 Main St . E., Hamilton (east of Sanford Avenue) on Friday May 30, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Saturday May 31, 2:00 p.m. at Melrose United Church, 86 Homewood Ave., Hamilton.
