Franjo "Frank" Čunko

It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of Franjo (Frank) on February 6, 2022 in his 81st year after a short, sudden illness at the Hamilton General Hospital. Beloved husband to Mirica (Mira) of 54 years. Loving father to Diana and son-in-law Aaron Moffatt, predeceased by his loving son Frank Michael and his parents Janko and Jela. He was a cherished and proud Dedo to Megan and Alexandra. He will be dearly missed by his Sister-in-law Goldie and husband Tom Matkovich, nieces Mary (Chris), Caroline (Olivier), Suzy, and their children. Greatly missed by Nikola and Ankica Ciglar and family. He will also be missed by his extended family in Croatia, sisters Zora (Slavko), Nada, Marica, Brother-in-law Mijo (Snjezana), and their families; As well as his many longtime friends in Canada. Frank was born in Croatia in 1941 and immigrated to Canada in 1965 by way of a transatlantic trip, staying with his grandfather in Temiskaming and later settling in Hamilton where he married the love of his life Mira in 1967. He commenced in a long and rewarding career as a crane operator at Dofasco for 26 years. Frank retired at the age of 52 where he spent his days with his Mira taking care of their beloved granddaughters. Frank always enjoyed gathering with family and friends whom enjoyed his keen sense of humour. An avid soccer fan he loved cheering for Hrvatska's national team during the Euro and World cups. He also had a love for the outdoors, could be often found tending to his garden, at local parks playing Baci ball, or up north fishing. He loved trying his luck at the Casino and found joy in all the little things life would bring. Heartfelt thank you to all of the wonderful doctors, nurses and healthcare aides at the General Hospital 7 South Acute Stroke Unit who cared for him with respect and compassion. Visitation at the Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East (at Kenilworth) on Wednesday February 9, 2022 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Croatian Catholic Church, 1883 King Street East, Hamilton on Thursday February 10, 2022 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. Private interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Holy Cross Church would be appreciated.
