George was very proud that he lived his entire life in Hamilton. He grew up on Cameron Avenue and could always be counted on to recount tall tales of Hamilton “back in the day”. George liked to enjoy himself and he liked to make people happy. Whether he was trying to catch a fish, prune a tree, or train a dog (Cindy, Sam and Sadie, Chloe) he was fully committed to his goal. He enjoyed spending time in Southampton out on his boat fishing. Annual family reunions included George and his late brother Jim (The Cheeto Brothers) taking on all contenders to win at quoits.
George worked at Dofasco for over thirty years. His friendships with his Dofasco friends were very significant to him. After retirement he enjoyed regular breakfast meetings that allowed these friendships to continue. In early retirement George volunteered with Heart Matters helping recent heart attack survivors adjust to lifestyle changes.
In late retirement he enjoyed talking with customers while driving the courtesy car for Mohawk Ford.
George is survived by his wife of fifty years Dianne (McCall); his children Mark (Nicola) Scales and Tracy (Gary) Scales; his grandchildren Jessie (Greg) Talsma, Emily (Josh) Creelman, Hayden (Isabelle) Talsma, Lily (Matt) Scales; his great-grandchildren Elliott and Madeleine Creelman and Blake Talsma; step-great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Jessica Justason; his sisters Ruth (Joseph) Mayer, Nancy (Bill) Griffin; his sister-in-law Marlene Scales and her children Jeff (Cathy) Scales, Chris (Joanna) Scales and their daughter Ellery, Janine (Jason) and their children Victoria, Alexandra and Natalia. George was predeceased by his parents William and Ruth (McCann) Scales; his sister Elizabeth (in infancy) and brother James (Jim).
Donations in George’s memory may be made to the Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation. A celebration of life for George will be held at a later date.
