It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Giovanni "John" Marcantonio. Upon reaching his 89th birthday, Giovanni died peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital on October 14th, 2024 after battling cancer.
Giovanni was born and raised in Limosano, Italy in 1935, and came to Canada in 1955 shortly after marrying the love of his life, Margherita Marrone; settling in east Hamilton until his passing. He retired from Ford Motor Company in Oakville in 1995, moving on to enjoy many years of gardening, traveling, jogging/walking and socializing at the local Italian meetup (Sam Manson Bocce Club). After Margherita could no longer manage being at home (with dementia), residing now in long term care, Giovanni faithfully visited with her daily until recently becoming too ill due to his cancer.
He was predeceased by parents Igino and Pasqua Marcantonio, in-laws Francesco and Sabina Marrone, his brothers Fr. Francesco, Gieusseppe and Pierino, his sisters Maria and Anna, and daughter Pasqualina, and many close brother and sister in laws and cousins. He is survived by his beloved wife Margherita, sister Cristina, sons Gino, Franco and David (wife Raffaela), grandson Jacob (fiancé Ashley) and granddaughter Erica, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nephews, great nieces, brother and sister in laws, cousins, and many friends.
Giovanni lived a full life. He had a strong faith in God and was a long-time parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church (where he shared his love of singing in the Choir), and later attended Incarnation Parish. He was a hard worker, but always made time for fun and laughter. His smile and outgoing larger than life personality will be greatly missed. We are sure that “Jumpin’ John” has taken his last leap right into the arms of our loving Lord.
