Mr. Herbert Josef Schmidt

SCHMIDT, Herbert At the Hamilton General Hospital, Herbert found his peace, on Wednesday, September 14, 2011. Beloved husband of Erna (nee Baisch). Loving father of Ingrid (Arnulf) Ganser of Salzburg Austria and Christa (Lyle) Sowden of Grimsby. Dear Opa of Stefanie, Alexandra, Maximilian and Kelly, and dear Uhr - Opa of Sophie, Marlena, Anna and Tim. He served with the Luftwaffe in WWII and spent four years as a P.O.W. in Russia. Mr. Schmidt was a retired employee of Westinghouse and was a longtime active member of the Germania Club for over 50 years, often serving as a member of the executive. He devoted much of his life to the promotion of the German language in Ontario, through his position as Schulreferent of the Trans Canada Alliance of German Canadians. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at The Cresmount Funeral Home, 1020 Upper James Street, (905-575-1154), on Sunday September 18, 2011 from 1:30 - 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
