Quietly and peacefully, Liesje slipped away on September 17, 2021 at Idlewyld Manor in her 99th year. Predeceased by her dear husband Pieter Wessel in 1987 and by her 2nd love and 2nd husband, William Robb in 2016. Liesje was a gracious humble person who possessed wonderful natural talents. She had a singing voice like an angel, a wonderful sense of humour and she wrote a book for her family revealing her experiences of coming to Canada. Oma was known to often, on her own, take a bus to visit her children and would exit the bus a few blocks from her destination so that she could hand out the sandwiches she had made to the homeless folks living on the street.
Born and raised in Holland and living through the Occupation of the Second World War, Oma sacrificed formal education in order to care for her ailing parents. She was married by proxy and emigrated to Canada with her husband, Pieter, and three young daughters. In Canada, they were later blessed with the birth of a son. Liesje was the beloved Mother to Beppie (deceased), (Robert McGowan), Marijke (Peter Gair), Janneke (Don Bowman), Pieter Wessel (Janet); stepmom to Derek Robb (deceased), Ruth and Barbara (Bill Kunkle). Adored and always remembered by her 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren as well as extended family in Canada, Holland and Germany.
Her legacy to all of us is her deep Christian faith, her strength and courage and the abundant love she poured out on her family, her entire life. To an amazing woman, we say our farewell. Not through tears of grief, but with thanks and love and joy for bestowing on us the great fortune of being part of her life. All of us are so much richer for it. Our gratitude goes to the Super Heroes at Idlewyld Manor for their dedicated care and to Jenny for her love, support and the exquisite blankets that brightened every day for Oma and kept her warm. Cremation has taken place. A private family service is being held. A life celebration will be held everyday in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your favourite charity would be appreciated. Online condolences can be left at www.cresmountfennellchapel.com
