Mara Matesa

Born in Karlovac County on August 7, 1935, to Katarina and Matej, Mara grew up in Podvozic, Croatia. In 1952 she married Vlado Matesa, and together they raised their sons, Miro “Mike” and Vladimir “Walter.” In the years that followed, Mara and Vlado made the courageous decision to emigrate to Canada, seeking a better life and greater opportunities for their family. Arriving with hope and determination, they built a warm home in Stoney Creek where Mara’s generosity, resilience, and devotion to family could flourish.

Mara will be remembered for her generous spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to her family. She loved preparing traditional meals, keeping family traditions alive, and welcoming friends and relatives into her home. She took pride in watching her children and grandchildren grow and succeed in the life she helped create here in Canada.

Survived by: her sons Mike and Walter, and their wives Josie and Claudia; grandchildren Michael (Cristina), Chloe, Marko, Jolie and great-granddaughter Mila.

Predeceased by her husband Vlado Matesa.

Visitation will take place at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton, on March 27, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Entombment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, 600 Spring Gardens Rd, Burlington, on March 27, 2026, at 1:30 pm. All are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mara’s honor to the Canadian Cancer Society. The family invites those who knew Mara to share memories and photos at the funeral home or with the family directly.
