It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our precious mother, Marion Agnes Dakin (nee Hawe), who passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 14, 2024, in her 88th year, while surrounded by family.
She was a New Year’s baby born in London, Ontario on January 1, 1936, to parents Charlotte and Clifford Hawe. Her family moved to Hamilton where they attended Central United Church. Marion loved music and sang in the church choir and was a soloist. After graduating high school, she worked at National Bakery, attended teachers’ college and got her first teaching job at Adelaide Hoodless Elementary School. She then married, and moved to the U.S. where she traveled and lived in several different states, including Connecticut, Louisiana, Washington and Florida. She and her husband settled in Stuart, Florida in the early 1970’s with their two daughters and later, their son.
Marion was a homemaker, actively participated in her children’s school events, was a Girl Scout leader, and a member of the choir and women’s group at the First United Methodist Church. Marion returned to Hamilton in the early 1980’s to be closer to her family and went back to substitute teaching, taught at Briarwood, worked as a manager for National Bakery and later for Culshaw Cakes as a cake decorator. She attended Emmanuel United Church in Hamilton for over 40 years where she was ordained as an elder of the church, following in the steps of her mother. She was affectionately known as the “gingerbread lady”, for her delicious decorated gingerbread men, houses and trains displayed each year at her church bazaar.
Marion loved and adored her cat, Rusty, who was a wonderful companion and constant source of comfort to her. He vacationed in Florida with her and now resides permanently in Florida. She will be remembered fondly by her friends and family for her quick wit, joking nature and twinkle in her blue eyes. Marion is predeceased by her parents, Charlotte (nee Green) and Clifford Hawe, of Hamilton, her adored sister Barbara Holman (nee Hawe) and brother-in-law, Ronald Holman, of Hamilton. She is survived by her children, Barbara Dakin and Abhi, Katherine Reynolds (nee Dakin), and Gordon Dakin and Megan (all of Florida). Marion was a proud grandma to Matthew Sanger and Ashleigh (Arizona), Nathaniel Dakin and Willa Dakin (Florida). She will be missed greatly by her niece, Susan Polawski (nee Holman) and Brett of Cayuga, and nephew, Charlie Holman and Michele of Hamilton, and great nephews, Carl (Keri), Ben and Matthew.
Visitation will take place at Emmanuel United Church, 871 Upper Ottawa Street, Hamilton, Ontario at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, with a funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Emmanuel United Church would be appreciated by the family. Online tributes and condolences may be left at crestmountfennellchapel.com.
