AVIS DE DÉCÈS
Michael John Petis
2 février 1934 – 10 février 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Petis peacefully on February 10, 2021 at the age of 87.
Mike leaves behind his devoted wife Betty (Nemeth) of 59 years. He was a proud and supportive father to children Suki Patricia, Julie Parco, Michael and appreciative father-in-law to Lou Parco. He loved his adoring granddaughter Asia Petis, and step grandchildren Melissa and Rodney Bierhuizen and Adam and Natalie Parco. Mike was honoured to cherish Liana and Ben Bierhuizen and Avery and Lauren Parco. He will be remembered by his brother-in-law Alex Nemeth and wife Mary, niece Sarah Lasko and nephew Matthewe Nemeth and their families. Mike’s personal angels Mihaly and Julia Petis, Alex and Elizabeth Nemeth, John and Nick Petis, Steve Karnay, Franz VandenBosch and Mario Pacenti have surely greeted him with open arms. Mike lived a life built on the values of his Catholic faith; love, generosity and giving. He had a magnanimous personality that was larger than life. With his wife by his side, he travelled the world. Mike sparked and nurtured friendships both at home, in Hungary and wherever he went. He was a leader and mentor to many in both business and life. You could always count on Mike to greet you with a smile on his face and have a funny story to tell. We all have memories of big gatherings around the goulash pot and hours spent late into the night singing Hungarian “halgato” songs with family and friends. He may have been born in Canada, but he had Hungarian blood through and through. We would like to thank the staff of Heritage Green Retirement Home for going above and beyond the call of duty over the past six months. Drs Alton, Boyle, and Ashbourne, Kathleen, and the Palliative Care team at St. Joseph’s Hospital who were instrumental in allowing Mike to make his way through his final journey in life with compassion, dignity, peace and even a bottle of scotch. Due to COVID protocols, a private Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Hungarian Greek Catholic Parish. A livestream of Mike's visitation and service will take place on Friday, February 12, 2021 at 10:30 am by logging on to www.markeydermody.com and clicking on “Join Livestream” under the Service section of the webpage. Cremation to follow and interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Mike’s name to the St. Joseph Hospital Palliative Care Unit.

Michael Petis was a loving and generous Grandfather, to his granddaughter Asia and my son Joah. He gave them special memories. He was generous, along with Betty, in supporting our young family to make a home for ourselves. I admired his faith and the respect he had for his culture. Our lives are interwoven through our family ties. May he rest in peace. Compassionate, caring thoughts to his family and friends.

Dearest Betty and family please accept our deepest condolences on the loss of you dear Michael.Upon meeting Michael you knew you were in the presence of a strong.caring and honest man.It was a privilege to know him.The best advice he gave me was what he called his 11th. commandment.SPEAK UP.I did that when Jenn and Matt were looking for a house and a house came up for sale in our neighborhood so i spoke to the owner and they were able to buy it and now we have our Adriana close by and we see her every day.Thank you Mike for that advice and rest in peace dear friend.Jean and Larry Lanigan.

Mike Petis, you always made me smile and remember all the wonderful times that we spent together, your home, our home and on the road. I remember my babies sleeping in your bathtub to keep them safe. I remember the love that you showed us and how you helped to shape our future. You made us believe in ourselves and the goodness of other people. Betty, Patti Suki, Julie and Michael - Thanks for sharing this wonderful man with us all.

Dear Betty and Family, I was so shocked and saddened to read of Mike's death. I will always remember his big heart, his big smile and his big hugs. He will be sadly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. I'm sure he, John D and Ron had a wonderful reunion and did a lot of catching up. Unfortunately, I have an appointment tomorrow and won't be able to watch his service but my thoughts and prayers will be with you all. May God bless you and comfort you.

Growing up, I would see Petis bácsi every Sunday at church. He never failed to greet my siblings and I with a smile, and offer us some candy as we walked past him to our pews. His presence at the church in our childhood helped make it a warm and happy place.

Oh Mike! Coming to your home was always so nice for me. You always had a big smile and something fun to say. You loved making interesting drinks for the adults and kid versions too! I remember one time playing under the stairs and you had asked me to come out and I wouldn't. You were not a fan of children not listening , and rightfully so! You had to pull me out and I was a force to be reckoned with that day. You told my dad he was going to have his hands full! LOL! Give my dad a hug for me. May you feel only happiness and love. God bless you.

Dear Julie and Lou--
Your father was bigger than life-- his spirit and presence filled a room! We remember being at a goulash backyard cookout on Passmore-- your dad was so proud to host, so generous and life-loving. He set a good example of embracing all that life has to give, of making each moment count, of the importance of family and good friends. May he rest in peace and be comforted by the loving embrace of our Lord Jesus.
With deepest sympathy to you and your dear mom as well.

Always loved seeing Mike Bàcsie and Betty Néni come through the door singing silent night at Christmas, sitting with Grandpa and tell stories and share great times with the whole family, and especially cooking szolona over the pit. He always pulled out a toonie at the end of a game when He watched me play Hockey. Going to miss you, Love Ryan.
