It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Piano on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the age of 92. Survived by his wife, Karen, and sons Michael (Debbie) and Daniel (Elizabeth). Predeceased by his son, David. Cherished grandfather to Stephanie (Rahim), Michelle (Matt), Hilary (Phil), Danielle (Brandon), David, and Evan (Vanessa). Proud great grandfather to Mila and Claire. Brother to John (Gina), Frank (Carol), Nick (Mary), Luigi (Cecilia), Mario (Vicky), Rose (Vince), Josie (Giulio), and predeceased by Barbara. Brother-in-law to Peter (Bobbi).
Born in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, Michael immigrated to "the best country in the world" in 1951 where he was soon joined by his parents and siblings. He was a long-time employee of Stelco prior to enjoying many healthy years of retirement. Michael's greatest achievement in life was not his career but his family. He loved having meals together, helping out at his son's cottage, and was very proud of his family's accomplishments, from travel and photography to academics and athletics.
Although the loss of the family patriarch is felt deeply, Michael's family is comforted by the many positive memories they have with him. He loved reading the news, keeping his home and Toyotas in tip-top shape, and journeying around the city in pursuit of a good deal and friendly conversation. They will always remember his joyful personality, great sweaters, and annual bounty of delicious backyard-grown tomatoes. To honour him now and always, they will move forward bearing in mind his most important piece of life advice: focus on living the simple life with a nice glass of wine, a fresh loaf of bread, and good company by your side.
The family wishes to thank the kind staff of Macassa Lodge for the care they provided Michael in his final days. As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 2 - 4 p.m., at Marlatt Funeral Home (615 Main Street East, Hamilton). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a local charity such as Good Shepherd Centres, Neighbour to Neighbour Centre, or Hamilton Food Share.
