Russell Herbert Smith

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who passed away on April 25th, 2011 at the age of 88. Russ was married to Joyce (née Hamer), for 61 years during which time they shared many joys. He was especially loved by his only daughter, Leanne Walter (Bruce), and exceptionally proud of his grandson, Christopher. The eldest son of the late Herb and Sadie Smith (Eaton) and predeceased by his sister Sheila in 1976, he was brother to Bill (Betsy), and uncle to their three daughters. Born and raised in Hamilton, Russ retired from Stelco in 1982. He was a member of the Barton Lodge #6 A.F. & A.M. An avid, self-taught, amateur photographer, Russ proudly operated “Photography by Smith” out of his home for many years photographing numerous weddings and other events. He attended St. John Presbyterian Church and then First Pilgrim United Church before transferring to St Columba Presbyterian Church in his later years. He will be fondly remembered and missed by many. Visitation will take place at Marlatt Funeral Home at 615 Main St East (east of Sanford), Hamilton on Thursday, April 28th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place on Friday, April 29th, 2011 at 11 a.m in the Marlatt Memorial Chapel. Interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
