On Wednesday, April 25, 2012, Wally passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital from lung cancer in his 89th year. Wally loved life and faced his illness with courage and quiet strength. He is survived by his wife, Helen, of almost 60 years, daughter, Kim and son-in-law Don Kivell, whom he considered a son. Special Grandpa to Melissa, Jill Buckland and Ian and great grandpa (Pa) to Logan.
Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he came to Ontario after serving his country in Europe from 1942-1946 in the Canadian Provost Corps. In Northern Ontario he met the love of his life and they married and settled in Hamilton. A motor mechanic, Wally owned Elgin B/A and later, Wally’s Gulf Service Station. He held many different jobs in his “retirement years.” Wally enjoyed many years as a volunteer at the Warplane Heritage Museum and was a long time member of the Ancaster Optimist Club. Always a thoughtful and caring man many friends and relatives will miss him, especially Mike Csany in Holland.
A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Okiwara,at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, who through excellent treatment gave us two wonderful years. They were a gift. A special thank you to the care teams at both Juravinski and St. Peter’s Hospital.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation at the CRESMOUNT FUNERAL HOME, 322 Fennell Avenue East on Sunday from 3-7 pm. Please join us for a celebration of a life well lived at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 720 Ninth Avenue on Monday April 30th at 11 a.m.
Although we miss him we are comforted to know that Dad is now at peace. Heaven is a brighter place today. He left us a legacy of love and decency that will continue to guide us. If the value of life can be measured in lives touched and memories left behind, he was wealthy beyond compare. In honour of Wally, perform an act of kindness today. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Warplane Heritage Museum or Trinity Presbyterian Church.
