On Saturday, Dec. 4th, our much loved “Uncle Bill” passed away in his 97th year, pre-deceased by his older brother Howard Findlay Bryce (Georgina Mae Bryce) and his younger brother Jack Gorman Bryce.
Bill was born in Hamilton, Ontario and was proud to call himself a “North Ender”. He attended Bennetto Public School and graduated from the Hamilton Technical Institute. At the age of 18, Bill joined the Canadian Navy where he served as a radar operator on the HMCS New Liskeard for approximately two years. On returning home from his WWII service, Bill held several jobs which included Otis elevator, Studebaker, Westinghouse and, finally, retiring from Camco.
In his younger years, and even after returning home from WWII, Bill was very involved in athletics, playing baseball and football for many years. When no longer playing competitive sports, he took up bowling with his brother Howard. Still fond of sports well into his retirement years, you would find Bill enjoying his evenings watching his favourites, namely the Ti-Cats, Leafs or the Raptors on his TV!
Actively involved at Hughson Street Baptist Church, Bill served in many capacities including Usher, Treasurer, and Deacon. Bill was always willing to provide transportation for fellow church members in need.Although never married, Bill valued family above many things. He lived with and took personal care of his mother who lived to over 101, and was always welcome at and enjoyed gatherings of every occasion with both of his brother’s families.
As a child and into his senior (and final) years, Bill loved to fish – and did so all over Ontario! He spent many quality hours on the water with his brothers and nephews, and was often the topic of caring conversations as the 2 nonagenarians (Bill and Howard) made their way out onto Pigeon Lake for a morning or evening of casting and angling!!
Bill was a very quiet and content man, but he had a hearty laugh and a generous spirit that touched each member of his family. He will be lovingly remembered as our “Uncle Bill” by nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and even great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews!
Family will be having a private funeral service at CRESMOUNT FUNERAL HOME, 322 Fennell Ave E., on Friday, December 10th with Interment at Hamilton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Elim Lodge Ministries.
