

Peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday August 10, 2014 at the Juravinski Hospital. Predeceased by his wife Pat (2010). Lovingly remembered by his children, Anne Farrington, of Dundas and David and his wife Corinne of Millgrove, his grandchildren, Jennifer, Kaitlin, Gregory and Jameson, and his sister Elizabeth McKeown. Bill spent his early years in St. John, New Brunswick and received his secondary education in Peterborough, Ontario. He received his Civil Engineering degree at the University of Toronto in 1951, at which time he decided to make Hamilton his home and began working for the TH&B Railway as a Civil Engineer. A year later he married Pat. He became a partner in an engineering firm in 1956, culminating in 1971 with the creation of Filer Consultants Ltd. He provided consulting expertise in structural engineering for industrial and institutional projects. His designs can be seen all over the region, including; McMaster University, the YMCA, Hamilton Place, Mohawk College, GO Transit, Mohawk Hospital, RBG and Dundas Town Hall. Throughout his career, Bill held key positions locally, provincially and nationally in professional organizations and associations. They include the Consulting Engineers of Ontario, Professional Engineers Ontario, The Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and the Hamilton Engineering Institute. Bill received special recognition from his professional peers. He was awarded Fellowships in the Engineering Institute of Canada, the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and The Canadian Academy of Engineering. He also received The Companion of the Order of the Sons of Martha from Professional Engineers Ontario. Many groups and organizations have benefited from his time as a volunteer, including, St. Peter's Hospital, The Royal Hamilton College of Music, The Salvation Army, The Canadian Club of Hamilton, St. John's Anglican Church in Ancaster, the Ontario and Hamilton and District Chambers of Commerce, and many more. Bill's most cherished recognition was in the granting of an honourary degree of Doctor of Sacred Letters from Wycliffe College in 1991 in Convocation Hall at the University of Toronto. Bill's commitment to Wycliffe College dates back to 1947, when he lived there as an undergraduate. His honourary degree was in recognition of his active involvement with the College as a Trustee, member of the College Council, a member of the Executive Committee and Chairman of the Property Committee for 12 years. Bill was inducted into the Hamilton-Halton Construction Hall of Fame in February 2003. In November of 2003, Bill was inducted into the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction. The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Erick Duan and his ICU team at Juravinski Hospital, as well as the PSW's from St. Elizabeth's for the compassionate care given to their Dad. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, 272 Wilson Street East, Ancaster on Thursday August 14, 2014 at 1 p.m. Reception to follow.
