Barbara Henry was born in Watertown, NY in 1930, graduating from Watertown High School, continuing her education undergraduate degree at Cornell University and eventually completing her Masters at Syracuse University and began her teaching career in Dolgeville, NY.
Barbara married Barry Henry in 1955, traveled to Utah with him while he completed his Army training and Barbara taught in a local Elementary school. She completed her Master’s Degree while pregnant with Heather. They relocated their family to South Glens Falls, NY where Barbara taught at Jackson Heights Elementary School in Glens Falls for more than 25 years. She and Barry raised three daughters, Leslie, Heather and Suzanne in South Glens Falls.
Barbara retired in 1987, moving to Hampton where they had purchased a retirement home. Within months of retiring, she began working for Hampton Public Library in the Children’s Department. She worked there for more than 15 years.
In 1989 Barbara and Barry moved to their dream retirement home in York County. Upon Barry’s retirement in 1991 they began traveling extensively. They celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary in 2005. Barry passed away in 2008, leaving a great void in her heart.
Barbara moved into The Arbors two years later, where she made many new friends, watching Downton Abbey, playing Bridge and traveling. 2016 saw her move to Magnolia Manor in Smithfield due to health concerns. She made new friends and worked in their little library. Eventually transferring to the Willow Creek Section where she received excellent care until her passing.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Willow Creek for their loving care and support for Barbara.
In addition to her daughters Leslie (Howard), Heather (Tom), and Suzanne (Mark) Barbara has a sister, Dorothy Hathaway (Joseph - deceased), four grandchildren – John and Jim Capobianco. Adam (Katy) Cassella and Mary (Jacob) Gandy, a great-granddaughter Lucy Rose Cassella and 3 nephews Jim (Liz), Andrew (Karen) and Matt (Debbie) Hathaway who will miss her greatly.
Barbara's daughters feel very blessed to have had such a wonderful mother. She was a strong and very caring person for all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations of hard-covered children’s books to local libraries in her name.
