Debbie lived a vibrant and full life marked by love, adventure, and a deep commitment to her family and community. She was the proud mother of Erin Hancock Sumner (Rodney), Andrew Hancock (Jennifer) and Jeffery Hancock (Odessa); a cherished grandmother to Cameron & Keenan Sumner, Jarod Hancock, Brittany Bennett, Crystal Nelson, Kelly Ferguson, Troy Bennett and great-grandmother to more than fifteen great-grandchildren who brought happiness and fullness to her life.

She is also lovingly remembered by Earnest Garrett, her companion and friend for over 40 years, whose unwavering love and friendship enriched her life in countless ways.

She attended Mamaroneck High School and Katherine Gibbs Business School, later beginning her professional career at Newsweek in New York City. Debbie possessed a true entrepreneurial spirit, always embracing new ideas and opportunities with enthusiasm.

She had a zest for life that was reflected in her love of travel, games, and cards—bringing laughter and spirited competition to every gathering. Debbie was an avid reader, a lover of movies, enthusiastic Yankee’s fan and had a deep affection for animals. Above all, she treasured the time spent with her family and friends who brought immense joy to her life.

A devoted member of her church, Debbie, found strength, purpose, and community in her faith. Her warmth, generosity, and sharp wit made her a beloved friend and confidant to many.

Debbie was predeceased by her mother Norma Barrett Martin and father Alexander Nile Martin, as well as her brothers Jerry Martin and Don Martin.

Debbie’s legacy is one of resilience, joy, and deep-rooted love for her family and friends.

A celebration of Debbie’s life will be held on Tuesday June 3rd at 11am at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, Hampton, VA. All who knew her are welcome to attend and share memories.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in her honor to The Cat Corner, Phoebus, VA.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
